I am looking at a Terex TS-24 for work on this large pond project. I am not all that excited about Terex compared to CAT after working on old CATs. The Terex runs dual Detroit engines. I am curious if there were any twin engine CATs made in the 70s-80s in that size range?

Cat 627-B models. Great machines. They are running around $25-$35,000 now. -glen

I think I can get the Terex for 17ish. Not really sure if that is a song or not. I would prefer a CAT but i also have to consider the proximity of available scrapers. Is there such a thing as a single engine 4x4 scraper? After seeing an old 613 in action, I just could not do that. Really need all tires turning IMO.

Are you doing this pond by yourself or are there going to be multible scrapers and push cats?
Where are you located?

If you're familiar with Cat, stick with what you know. Terex creates a lot of controversy but I like them. They can move a lot of dirt cheap but you have to know how to keep them running. If you're not moving dirt that far, do a search on this site and take a look at Rolly66v's machines; Cat with a low operating cost.

There is a 27-B listed on Machinery Trader for $19,900. If it's a a couple of thousand more, go for the Cat, it's worth it. If it's for one project, why not rent one?

My hope in just buying one is I can hopefully sell it for what I have in it, making this a cheaper deal than renting. CAT wanting about 2K/week for a scraper. Does not seem like that much but this project is getting financially out of control quick!

I am going to check with a very large const co my family works with to see if they happen to have any cats hanging around that need to go away. I am not exactly a fan of the detroit engines due to the two stroke (big rpm) but I guess there are millions of them around running.

Keep in mind on the scraper though, the second they are put on a transport hauler, the expense gets much bigger. The Terex can be put on 10mi of dirt roads and it is at the job site. Has one 671 and one 6-110 which worries me. I guess the 6-110 is obsolete. I only need maybe 50-60hrs from it, then turn it.

I figure once I have the bulk of material moved, maybe we can look closer at a play day and have fun shaping it like a gold course...😊

If I remember correct from your earlier post you wanted to move 25-30,000 cyd of compacted soil. Doing that in 50-60 hours is moving 500 cyd / hour or 4000 cyd / 8 hour day. That's moving a lot of dirt at a very aggressive production rate about 3 to 4 times the normal. As for the TS-24 being close that is a big plus. As for the discontinued engine that's bad. Reselling the equipment is a gamble and pays off when no breakdowns accure. If that discontinued engine blows during the work, you will be asking yourself why didn't I rent. When you rent on a small job, the risk of hoses blowing or all majors aren't yours, just call the owner and tell them to fix it. When you play the resale game, all those risks are now yours. I know I just muddied up the water for you, but I just want you to be aware of some stuff that does happen. I once made an attachment for a road widener. I could have rented a machine for $2500 to do the job, but decided that if I spent $10,000 to make my own, I could pay for it in 4-5 jobs. So on the last day of the first job my operator forgets his were abouts and tears the attachment of the machine, and leaves me with scrap metal. I was thinking, why didn't I just rent it. It's always a gamble. Those that do gamble the most, do gain the most.

I agree that my estimation of run time will probably double. I don't have a real good feel on these. I am also considering the fact that I will run sun up/down, 7 days/week until complete.

I know it's a gamble here as with any machine purchase, regardless of target use. I would feel better knowing parts are all available but I also know this is a relatively easy job for this machine regarding the soil conditions and the fact that the owner will run it. makes a difference IMO. Not saying I won't break it but I have usually been good about pushing it but not abusing it.

I have never had an engine just "let go" without some indication it is going south. that being said, I have never operated a two stroke diesel in my life. I build two stroke gas engines for a living though!!😊

I am trying to think of things to check on this 24 to ensure it is decent.

Detroit engine runs basically the same speed as a 4-stroke, 2100 RPM just SOUNDS like 4200...but yeah, that 110 situation is scary, parts are pretty much Unobtanium...
