[color=#333333]Hello, a 22 I picked up and got running is in need of a new throw out bearing. The one that was in it doesn't look like a bearing that should have a load put on it horizontally, which is why I'm thinking It was wrong. The one that was in it was a England bearing # 7209JB. If any one has a modern part number and a location to get one that would be great. My local napa has this one but wanted to make sure it's right. Thank you

What you need is a thrust bearing, the bearing pictured may be, but cant say for sure.

Thrust bearings are designed for thrust to be applied in one direction from what I can tell, but a expert I am not. It looking at how it works in the tractor pressure is applied in one direction to engage clutch and the opposite to release, kind of makes me scratch my head.

22 Parts Book says you need a 4B3665 bearing, it will be a thrust bearing for sure, a good bearing shop should be able to cross match the Cat part number to a new bearing.

Thank you guys for your quick responses, I googled the cat# 4B3665 and found a lot that look the same like this one, how do you know it's s thrust bearing without it saying? $13.37 on ebay, I would probably go for better quality.

Hi Thomas,
that picture you posted does not look like a thrust bearing. For an idea of their construction, google thrust bearing and look at the pictures (and wikipedia). You can see that the "balls" roll between the fore and aft faces, rather than the inside and outside faces. This is so they can carry the load when the bearing is pushed up against the throwout face of the clutch assembly i.e. moving along the shaft. As Mike said, you can get a cross-ref from the Cat part number at a reputable bearing house or a member on here may have a cross-ref already.

Well done Mr 22 guru with those numbers, hey, you will be pleased to know your holey Hyundai is getting a good flogging now by Sam, somehow it passed roadworthy inspection and got registered yesterday, he loves it though at 6'4" he finds the drivers seat a bit cramped so I'll need to find a way to get me rearward travel on the seat.
regards
Mike

A radial ball bearing like shown can still take some thrust loading, so it may very well the original design. A true thrust bearing is more commonly used, but radial ball can actually take quite a bit of thrust. It may be they used it there to save on number of different bearings or for cost reasons. If all the evidence points to that being the OEM design I wouldn't worry too much about using it.
