Have this 28 that I’m determined to bring back but it’s going to be a lot of time, engine is loose, main clutch not stuck but not right, steering clutches stuck. Can use exhaust manifold and have located and retrieved a good intake and drop tube, will need to locate or just build something to replace the heat box.  Pins and bushings are shot, sprockets and rollers will be usable. Good tin work all there but engine side panels.  Anybody know if rails or chains are interchangeable with another model?  Is there any truth to they would interchange with a gas thirty or another model?

Even though this poor little crawler is a basket case, I feel at the production number of 1171 that it should be saved. Thats why I have decided to see this twenty eight survive rather than parts tractor. Luckily its a smaller tractor too making it easier to handle as far as tearing components down and handling them. Any advice or criticism would be appreciated. Id better get started pulling finals and get those clutch discs and brakes freed up.

It looks straight enough to warrant a makeover of sorts. Not about to knock anyone's iron.
Darn it man, I thought for sure you were going to tell us you scored it 2 miles from home and walked it back in 3rd gear for minor work! Oh well, for the love of tractors.
What's the story line behind this one?
Thanks, JM.

Looks like a very worthy project, keep up the good work. I believe that tracks off a D4 narrow gauge tractor will fit .just less links. See next post!

Track from Cat 20, 25, 30, 35 and D35 will fit. 30, 35 D35 have more links. D4 rail has a different spacing between rails, so really only fit if rollers are well forn, otherwise rails wear the flanges to fit.

I wasn't actually looking for any stray cats when I found this one. I was on a trip looking for John Deere 8200 end wheel drills about 40 miles from home when my wandering eye spotted yellow cat hoods in a old barn that was in the yard of this old broken homestead. I got permission to look at them and found a 5t d4 which they wanted to keep and this 28 that I started asking them if it could be bought. Needless to say, I had to make a extra trip for grain drills, plows, and a cat 28. It was a winch recovery but went smoothly. I have access to some near perfect rails that will have to be shortened but at least I don't have to search for any. I counted 29 links on the Cat 28.

Not looking? I have heard that excuse before. Hahahah. I hate it when that happens. Good deal on the 28 and the rest of the goodies you acquired before year end. JM

Skinner, I think I bought the manifolds off your twenty eight, so I have your good intake and drop tube, I can use my exhaust, I just need to fabricate a heat box or fill the gap somehow and I should be fixed up, can't think of anything else on your parts cats that I need at the moment, but glad to have the resource, thanks
