Hi all,

Just purchased a D5 Dozer with the serial numbers: 31v49789-4n7363

I would like to get Year and model of dozer so I can purchase owner/operator/parts manuals etc.

When I asked the previous owner he said its a 1974 D5.

Thank you in advance for any help you may have.

Mike

31Vxxxx is not a good number.
I think your misreading the 31V as actually being a 3Nxxxx which would designate the engine arrangement 4N7363 as either a 95J398-up (narrow gauge) or 96J4791-up (wide gauge) D5 model tractor in 1974.

Hi,
Thank you for the reply. What is the difference between narrow & wide gauge. With the serial number, how would I find out what model Dozer I have? Thank you again!

"Gauge" is the width of the tracks, measured center to center. For the D5, narrow is 60" and wide is 74".
3N49781 is the engine s/n
4N7363 is the engine arrangement
The first three characters in the tractor s/n designate the series (model)
followed by the build sequence number.
Yours is most likely a 96J model as the 95J is less common.

Ok, I found the plate with the serial numbers

D5 96J 6030 8P5568
3306 3N49789 4N7363

Measured the track from center to center and its about 74". "Wide Gauge"

Thank you for your help!

My info shows 96J6030 to be a late 1977 model near end of production.
Would also explain the high engine s/n.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
