You might try to find the S/N tag -

Lot of Caterpillar V-8's were used in Small GE Switch Locomotives - D-1700 series engines.

Hi, [email protected].

Methinks you have a Cat D17000 engine there - hard to know why anybody would do that switch 'cos the early D8Hs were almost as high a horsepower as the most common top rating for a D17000 - 235 HP in the early D8Hs against 240 HP for the D17000. The later D8Hs went to 270 HP.

The D17000 could be tuned somewhat higher than the 240 HP but I suspect that it might not have been recommended.

On top of that, the D17000 would likely rev a fair bit slower than the original D8H engine too.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

The undercarriage is in poor condition and not knowing any history also devalues it, your looking at scrap price per ton. Giving a location and some pictures of serial numbers would help to hopefully advertise it more so it doesn’t end up in china.

So few of these combinations are sold that there is no "what's it worth" price, other than what Clayton wrote, which is scrap value. You'd obviously need to find a willing buyer that very much wanted some or all of this unit and is prepared to move it from the property, which is not a small job for a non-running (I assume) machine. So, look up the local scrap prices in your location and then subtract the cost of transportation to the scrap yard, and that's probably the minimum price you'd get.

Hi, [email protected]

Unquote.

I suspect that Neil may have just made a 'slight' understatement with his message above. I would not be at all surprised if this is the ONLY D8H to ever be fitted with a D17000 V8 engine. I KNOW that at least a couple of MUCH erlier vintage D8s, 8R series, 1941 - '45, to be precise, have been fitted with the D17000 engines but NO other D8Hs.

I think that scrap value would be a pretty good guess.
