OK, I have spark and compression. Tomorrow I will introduce fuel to the equation.

Now the question.

When I turnthe pony over the diesel fan will roatate too. I can't seem to disengage the Pony and the Diesel.

I did at one time have them disengaged but now they seem to be slightly engaged.

I have made a bracket for mounting a small gas engine to the fender so that I can but a rubber belt from the pony pulley to the gas engine.

Now I have a pony engine for the pony engine to start the diesel. LOL

The arm was getting tired.

This unit has not operated since the 50's.

any ideas out there?

Thanks Jim

sounds like your clutch on the pony is not disengaging--it should be pulled all the way to the rear---changing the oil and/or flushing out the clutch compartment may help.

Not at all sure on the lever locations. Is there anything on the internet showing the propber locations for the levers during the starting procedures?

Your pinion is snapped in. Most clutches drag enough that you will never start it with a rope.

Pony starter is the way to go. RPM's are your friend when trying to start a sick pony.
How many horse is your engine?

I have an electric oakie starter. If they don't start by the third rope I set it up. I am getting too old to pull that rope all day long.

The engine is a 3 hp Briggs & Stratton. Where do you get the pony starter motor at? Is there a web site?

I think if I can get this spinning fast enough and spinning for a while this will help to free up the clutches

there are two levers---the outer one is almost horizontal and that engages the pinion gear when you pull up on. the inner one is the clutch and when you push it forward/down that engages the clutch--it should snap over center--when you pull up/rear that engages the braked discs to stop the pinion gear from turning so it can engage the flywheel easier.
once the pinion is engaged the diesel has to start to release the catches--otherwise it stays engaged.
you really need to obtain an operators/maintenance manual for the machine.
you need to look for used parts for the pony engine electric starter

Pony Starters & parts can be hard to find and a bit pricey. If I didn't already have one I think I'd try mounting a Starter-Generator on top of the pony, tucked up under the hood. Starter-generators are pretty common and usually found on older garden tractors. Make sure you get one that spins in the right direction.

I like the idea of the Briggs pony starter. How about hooking up a weed whipper motor to start the Briggs? That would be quite a spectacle to see at a show!😆 Just imagine having THREE engines to start the Diesel.

A friend of mine is scrapping out 3 8t Graders with pony engines, 1 of the 3 pony engines runs really good, the other 2 have starters on them, If any one is interested let me know, maybee we can make something work before they go to the bone yard. He wants to get rid of them in the next couple of weeks.

What sort of pony is it - is it the same as a D2/4 pony? If so, I'm interested in the starter components.
Cheers,
Neil.

The pony motor would be different as 8t grader is 318 engine same as a D6.The starter motor I believe could be adapted ,but don't know about belt drive unit.I have starter that came with a D6 I bought in pieces, but the solenoid would not bolt up and fit under the hood.It was then that it came to me,the seller had many 7u D4's as well and many parts for them laying a round,so I assumed this must be a D4 starter. The noise cone indexed right, but the solenoid did not fit were the holes to are drilled and taped.

Jim, this is how my D4 looked when I got it - fitted with a starter/genny for the pony. It worked a treat.

Now that I've got the pony carb properly sorted and a good spark it starts first pull with string so I have taken it off as it looks daft!

If you have engaged the starter pinion then there's a way of releasing the latches via an inspection panel in the bellhousing - I can't remember how this is done but a search of this forum should get you the answer. If the pinion is engaged and the pony clutch is dragging I don't think you'll start the engine with string

Julian.

I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
