I found the trip up Haleakala really interesting---and also took an ATV tour thru the red dirt farmlands--took a week to get all the red color out of my nose, ears and head!
Saw a number of old cats on the back way from Hana, an old dirt road thru farms, pastures, ravens and breathtaking views--need a Jeep or something pretty rugged.
Yeh, its been a few decades since I was in Maui but when I was there Napili was a pineapple field! Didn't have 4-wheelers then but we did have horses to get us into the back country. Now I love my rusty iron and am wondering if there are any other iron players on Maui. I've got a Wrangler lined up but, South of Hana when I was there was...NOT easy to travel. Are you saying past the lava fields around the South side of the East end? If so I might try to see what I can find from the Kehai side. Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Yes--south of Hana and then west on 31 and then north on 31. We had a Wrangler too--it was a pretty long day trip from Kaanapali --watch out for cows thru the pastures.
I believe Chapter 11 covers all the Hawaii Islands
HANK TAVARES gave us wonderful day , give him a call

The Alexander & Baldwin Sugar Museum is worth a visit, some neat machinery there on the grounds. To the east from the museum there is also at least a dozen old Cats (some look restored) along Omaopio Rd. on the way up to Kula Hwy from Puunene (Pulehu Rd.). I never did find out who the owners were of the machinery.
The Hwy 30 loop on the west side of the island is scenic, lots of farms and ranch land on the northern section. Just watch out for the locals, they drive really fast on the 1 lane road. The blowhole at Nakalele is worth a stop just don't get too close.
