Ron Meeder does have a nice collection! I usually stop by to visit with him at least once a year to see what is new.
As far as Coal Mines, I believe there is a Mining/Construction Exhibit in Eastern Ohio? I think I saw a link through one of the Heavy Equipment sites.
There are Amish tourist towns in Indiana not far off from the I-90/80 corridor.
Ohio has Thomas Edison's birthplace.
Pennsylvania has Titusville Oil Museum not too far out of the way.
New York state has Erie Canal history and as long as you are ending up around Ithaca, Ilion isn't too far away from there, Remington gun Company used to have a really good museum.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
