Bought a new rubber for my transmission gear select. Torn. When I got it off, found the steel cup over the shifter housing deteriorated some around the edges from the torn boot. Have yet to find disassembly procedure, but referencing parts, it appears that the cotter pin is removed and the shifter come out. The cup is not damaged enough to cause any problems, but there are some debris that went thru the hole and just sitting there, and I want it out, and lube up the shifter.

Who has removed their gear select shifter? How does it come out?

Check your D6 Servicemen's Referemce Book, about pages 61,62,63. It is fully described with pictures.

Old Magnet,
I must need another manual. Pages 61, 62, 63 are on fuel system. My maintenance book is called Operation and Maintenance Instruction. I have a Servicemen's Reference Book on Caterpillar Diesel engines. The manual you quote, I have yet to find.

If it matches the quality of the engine manual, I am interested.

Meanwhile, in the Jensales Chassis only service manual, I found the topic covered. Pictures are terrible, but words are OK.

All I need to do is take the cotter key out, spring and cover enough to vacuum it out. Maybe replace that cover. I just don't feel comfortable with that debris in there I can see. L887 cover.

Thanks👍

It's one of the ones I recommended on your previous post.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
