Hi fritzj29,
welcome to the BB.
from memory there should be a thermostat in the T/C outlet pipe down next to the T/C housing that by-passes oil back to the T/C until it reaches operating temperature at which time the T/stat should open and send oil out to the Trans oil cooler.
The chart below gives the expected temperature differentials (Delta T) in a cooling system's areas.
A cheap infra red temperature gauge is invaluable in doing these tests.
NOTE for the T/C chart section that low oil flow thru the cooler is one cause of overheating--if this is the case there will be a high temperature differential across the cooler with good oil flow or, if the T/stat is fully shut no oil flow there would be a no differential across the cooler.
Air flow can also effect cooling results and the charts should help you with this test--air flow tests are done at Low Idle (generally around 600 RPM) as per the chart in the areas depicted.
Left clicking on the scan and clicking on it again will enlarge them twice for easier reading.
Hope this helps.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
