Good day guys, (inside anyway, rainy here). I noticed after a good bit of use with D7 3T a track pin had worked almost completely out. How fortunate for me to have had found after using a few hour and it to be parked. This pin (attached pic) was like inches out. Trying best to explain. These pins as you well know on tread plates have a outer and inner 'two piece female' connection. The pin had like wormed away completely from inside two piece female portion and was barely only still connecting plates with the outer connection. By using some bar clamps I was able to pull tread back in line and tap pin back into inner portion (much easier said than done). Even tapped completely in there is no protruding 'extra' pin at all on the inside. I know this probably isn't right. As pic shows it is different than every other pin on entire dozer. It looks like possibly an access pin? Also I had another pin issue up front on the left side of blade. This pin kept trying to work out. I finally melted a little dollup of welding rod onto (pic shown) and have had no further issue with it. Was wondering thoughts about acquiring longer tread pin and doing the same on tread. I can easily grind away rod to remove pins. Also I need manual. Seiscat, I have your advice to look for operation and maintenance instructions and service manual parts book. I read on archives that the service shop manual was the same thing cat sent to shops for them to use for repairs 'in the day'. Is this manual cover maintenance? Do I need 3 total books? You really need 4 books.
Operator's instructions which covers lubrication and maintenance procedures...The owners manual.
Parts book which covers all the parts of tractor, diesel engine and starting engine as well as attachments like electric start, lights, PTO's etc
Serviceman's reference book for tractor......only covers the tractor chasis
Serviceman's reference book for the engine. Covers both main and starting engines

Books for any Cable controls, or hydraulic controls, bulldozer etc which are not covered as "attachments" in the parts book and other manuals.

You probably need a new master pin. The master lnks you're driving it through may be stretched a little, so even a new one may not stay put. If a new pin doesn't stay put, you may have to weld it into the links on at least one side. The master pin does not extend any farther outside of the rails than any other pin, but it is slightly smaller so it should go in and come back out a lot easier than a regular pin. If the master link is stretched, maybe a regular pin would fit tight enough to work for you.

One thing you may want to check is how far the track tension adjustment is extended. If it's at its limit, you may want to consider having the pins and bushings turned or maybe cutting a link out if the tracks are not worth the cost of the turn.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

ccjersey Thx I have copied info and ready to begin accumulating these manuals. The track extender I am unsure of without those books.. Seems like the front track rollers that are tensioned from hydraulics and large coil springs lying horizontally on frame between upper and lower track could be called extenders. Starter side track had quite a lot of sag when this dozer arrived. I couldn't get to the zerk good with protective shield in place but after removing I was able to get it to take a good amount of grease. The track tightened and has been ok since. Thank U all again.

The service manual will show you many pictures and adjustment procedures for many aspects including track tensioning and specs to determine if your rails are worn beyond limits. Parts book will show every part & its number for the entire machine. I am in the middle of replacing hydraulic track tensioner seals on my D7E and these books have taken all the guesswork out of it. They are really well done and easily found on ebay. Plus the knowledge and sharing of expertise on this site is incredible.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
