Can an old D4 be tow started? I do appreciate all the help I've gotten from folks like Soapy and OldMag.. etc.... but now I'm totally stumped... Pony motor mag is not working and I can't seem to figure it out... even tried using a external auto coil and condenser... I have continuity through the pts. Today tried using a gas Briggs engine but apparently a five horse wont get it done.... so.... can one tow start a D4 and if so will a full sized Jeep four wheel drive p/u with a low range do the job? and What gear would I use to make it work? if it will anyway.... please help ,,, ole Chug Chug and I are bumming... thanks Doug

yes you can tow start it , you will need something heavier than a pickup to pull it , like a 60 hp tractor so you have the weight.

I have 2 D4 s that I park on a downhill and commonly roll start on compression. Use 5th gear. They usually start right up in a very short distance. On level land a full size 4x4 pickup might do it, it is worth a try.

I would try cleaning the points again. I just fixed one of mine the other day after 5 long years of compression starts. I got it stuck where I could not roll it.

Its quite possible to start a D4 with a decent size 4x4, tow the D4 in top gear at walking pace -no faster, get it rolling on decompression, put it on full compression as soon as oil pressure comes up and then open the throttle. Towing any faster than walking pace is a waste of time and will only cause wheelspin.

Putting some ballast in the back of the 4x4 should help as well. A whiff of go juice possibly, unless you have plenty of straightaway to pull it.

My brother has an early RD-4 with a temperamental pony engine. We use his Ford 3/4 ton 4X4 to pull start it right out of the tractor shed. It pulls it without problem. 5Th gear and about 6 feet and it's running.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

take out the spark plugs and roll the pony over by hand. does the mag impulse or snap near TDC on compression? disconnect the on off switch to make sure it isn't grounded and check the wire from the mag to the switch to make sure it isn't bare and grounding.
