yes you can tow start it , you will need something heavier than a pickup to pull it , like a 60 hp tractor so you have the weight.
Ok so my p/u wont do it... Damn wish I could get my pony motor to spark.....any idea on where I might get parts for the mag
Hi mcbitchman, have you given florin tractors a call as they have spare magy's both eisemann and the american Bosch ones

I have 2 D4 s that I park on a downhill and commonly roll start on compression. Use 5th gear. They usually start right up in a very short distance. On level land a full size 4x4 pickup might do it, it is worth a try.
I would try cleaning the points again. I just fixed one of mine the other day after 5 long years of compression starts. I got it stuck where I could not roll it.
Its quite possible to start a D4 with a decent size 4x4, tow the D4 in top gear at walking pace -no faster, get it rolling on decompression, put it on full compression as soon as oil pressure comes up and then open the throttle. Towing any faster than walking pace is a waste of time and will only cause wheelspin.
Putting some ballast in the back of the 4x4 should help as well. A whiff of go juice possibly, unless you have plenty of straightaway to pull it.
My brother has an early RD-4 with a temperamental pony engine. We use his Ford 3/4 ton 4X4 to pull start it right out of the tractor shed. It pulls it without problem. 5Th gear and about 6 feet and it's running.
