Timing starting motor for Cat 12 8T10279

I am having trouble gettin this little motor timed. Looking at it from the front, the flywheel has "top" stamped on it and to the right about an inch, it says "mag". There is a pipe hole on the front but there is nothing in there.
The little gear in the back has a "M" on it. I can pull it out and turn it any where. The lower or big gear has a "M" on it also. I have tried turning it to "1" serveral times, but nothing lines up in the hole. If someone could help me or tell me what I am doing wrong, I really would appreicate it. Attached are pictures of the motor.

The "I" mark is used to index the idler gear (big) to the crankshaft gear. If that is correct...and should be unless you've had it apart then the "M" marks on the idler should match the "M" mark on the mag drive gear.

Then you need to time the mag to the drive (attached)
