I have been having problems getting my pony motor to start on my 1955 catapillar 955a traxcavater dozer.
It was running great until it no longer was getting any spark so I got another magneto. It is now sparking, but I believe my timing is off. I have the manual and it states there is an M on the motor gear to align up with the magneto. There is not one on my motor. On my belt wheel there is a TC and a MAG. I was told the TC means top center and I should align up with the center line mark on case cover of pony motor. I put the magneto wheel facing about 2:00 o'clock "when the top right is open". This is not working. I am not getting any popping at all even when I use starting fluid. Any help would be great.
thanks Joe

The timing mark is on the back side of the gear and there is a pipe plug that you remove to see it on the far side of the poney motor. I have timed my motor (before learning about this site) by brining one cylinder to TDC on a compression stroke and putting the mag in with the rotor pointing to that plug wire on the cap. One tooth off in either direction and the rotor doesn't line up.

Good Luck

If your using the marks on the flywheel the "Mag" mark is supposed to be aligned with the mark on the cover.

How do I position the magneto geers to put it in correctly? "in the meantime until I buy the direct-start conversion from you"

To time the gears, as skip states, remove the pipe plug on the back of the magneto mounting and (while standing on your head peering in the hole) align the "M" mark on the cam gear with the "M" on the magneto gear.

On the back of the pony motor is the diesel engian. How do I get behind to look in the hole after I take out the plug? The dozer frame is above. Do you use a mirror?
I will try lighting the flywheel mag line with the magneto m first
Thanks

Yes, that is a bad spot, even without the loader. Try mirror with flashlight, sun light, whatever. Even using the flywheel marks the magneto has to be timed right. You can use the flywheel marks with the mag cover off so that you can see the rotor coming up on #1 cylinder (left cylinder sitting in the seat) and the magneto gears aligned as shown....

Hi Team,
the "M" mark will only align in the timing hole every second revolution of the flywheel.
I feel this is where most people go wrong and simply correct the mistake by swapping the plug leads in the mag cap.
All the mechanics at The Dealer used to hand the Traxcavators over for us lucky Apprentices to cut our teeth on.
Cheers,
