For sale locally to me.  D4 7J 1701W

Supposedly ran when parked 6 years ago, although looks longer to me.  Seller is a nephew of former owner who passed last year.  Appears complete but mag and carb for pony are missing.  There is an electric motor and pully by pony rope sheave, looks like they had a starter set up of some sort.

Undercarriage looks fair to me?  Missing an upper idler on left side.

They posted it at $3k which seems a bit steep to me considering the condition.  Any thoughts on machine/pricing/etc?

Hi, rokke17.
I'm with ROME K/G on that canopy roof - wunnuva kind. A STIRLING example of doing what you can with what you have.

Without knowing further details about the blade lift, I would be VERY wary of that tractor. D4s were not built to have the blade lift supported on the front end until the D4Ds which were the first model with a full subframe and hardnose. That's why ALL the earlier machines had the blade lift mounted on the track frames.

Just my 0.02.

Being the optimist, it has possibilities. But Deas is correct about the dozer lift. Again it could be solid but better chance it is not. I am guessing track could be very good, looks like a lot of link height there. The bad is they are rusted and not flexing, may need pressing apart to fix. And just because chain were replaced, we cannot see the rollers. Another guess, but because of PTO on the back and home built blade lift, it has been a farm tractor and has not been used much as a dozer.

So possibilities, some good. Others .........................................maybe not. Expect a lot of wrench time ether way.

Hi, rokke17.
I don't think the canopy is the only thing on that tractor that shows people doing what they could with what they had. That fuel tank and seat might look 'Caterpillar-ish' but it'z like no other Cat seat tank that I have ever seen. Mighta been a TALL guy involved with it somewhere in its history too - the seat seems pretty high and set back a bit.

That dozer blade has a rather LeTourneau-ish 'smell' to it and may have been 'donated' from a bigger tractor than a D4 by the size of the C-frame.

BUTTTTTTT - - - - GOTTTTA LURRRRVE that canopy roof. Would not stop much more than sunlight from falling on you but it IS 'different'. In fact, UNIQUE

If you want to see if it runs you could try pull starting the diesel directly.

I've done it with blade on before. As I recall we jacked up the blade and then chained it up. Might be able to get away with just digging under blade, putting chain beneath, and letting chain tension raise the blade. dunno.

I don't think the camper shell is an actual operational feature, it was probably put on there to protect the Cat in storage. It appears to have done a good job of that. As far as stuck track links, If you could run it in a creek for long enough for water to seep into the links to lubricate they may free up. My D4 had a stuck link, plowing snow cleared it up.
