As not to hijack someone else's thread, I will start my own.
We have a Cat that is painted red, my dad thinks it is a 1971 941, I do not think he is correct.
It has 39 cleats, a 3304 engine, and alternator, not a generator, and the rad is split with one side being an oil cooler of some sort.
The only serial numbers I can find are on the engine and the transmission housing behind the engine.

I have been fighting overheating issues but I am going to go through the oil cooler next weekend and hopefully that will clear up.
Any help identifying this would be appreciated.

That appears to be a late model 951. The model number is barely legible but it looks to be an 86J designation. Can you get a good read of the number?

SeanR, that shovel is a 951C about 1977 onwards I would say even posibly around the 1980 zone, its missing the "Return to dig" control rod but looks a smart little banger, the red and the blue thing is putting me in an odd place but I dont have to look at it again? anyhow on the second pic the thing that has Oil Cooler printed on it is your engine over heating probable cause, you need to strip the kit down and clean out the water tubes etc, dont get crap into the oil ports unless you want to fit a new crank.

p.s. your tracks are on the correct way! the fact that it has a Horn button (twin horns) puts it up on the age.

If you'll notice the engine SN, it's 78P45557 which makes it a lot newer than 78P5557 relayed in the other thread.

Hi Sean,
how does one get access to the Cat online parts catalog that you mentioned? Does it include list pricing as well?

SeanR, either you or me is not reading the post that I put up??? go to the post where I asked you if you are reading my posts ????? and read all the words as this will tell you what part you need to get, to help you some it comes in a kit, that is a little box with all the bits you will need to strip down and service the thing I have been telling you about, ask your Dad for help if you get in a jamb.

I hope this helps you select the correct bits, the piece that you will be unbolting can be a fiddle as there is 2 bolts that take a bit of thinking about to undo, I look forward to the pic's.

Well the passages were clean as a whistle! So much for that.
We took the water pump off and took it to an old retired mechanic to get his opinion as if the fins were wore down.
The block flows real well, the rad flows real well, and the oil cooler is clean as a whistle.
Any other suggestions?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
