I hauled my new purchase home on Saturday and started to strip the sheet metal off so I could power wash it before putting it into the shop. Now I will drain what fluids might be it it and clean fuel lines etc and see it if will run. Just a couple of questions. Is the difference between the first series of 22's and the last series the location of the "Twenty Two" on the radiator. I see a picture of a 22 on the previous thread about the Portland convention with what appears to be a 22 with just a small metal plate on the bottom of the side of the rad. Also, my engine has green colored cylinder blocks. Would this indicate a rebuild and were they supplied by Cat? Thanks, Leon

The "22" metal plate you had seen may have been an R2 plate. I saw a couple R2 cats at Portland and several D2's.

hello Leon, yes the first serial numbered 22 had twenty two across the top of the rad and the 1j second serial numbered 22 had the small metal tags on the bottom side of the rad with caterpillar across the top of the rad.
the green paint may mean a rebuild ,if you post the cast numbers from each set of jugs it will tell what year they were cast ,bruce oz

Bruce, the letters are different on each jug and one is hard to make out as it has a small frost crack weld through the last letter, it appear as UUM? The second jug looks like ULPA. Does that make sense? There definitely is not six characters and they are letters not numbers. Leon

Thanks again Bruce, that is good to know. So it looks like the engine was rebuilt in 1945 after ten years of service. I am going to try to find out when it was last run. Leon

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
