If it's on 6v currently (pun), you could just leave it on 6v. If any of the components have failed, then it might be easier to convert to 12v. If it were me and I was determined to go 12v, I'd either go with an OEM replacement 12v generator and regulator, or fit a 1-wire Delco. Don't know that I'd bother messing around with coil changeouts and such.
I have a 5U that I just restored and it's still 6v and it spins that pony over like it's on steroids. I have the 18A generator which keeps the Optima battery in good shape. I don't have lights yet but am planning to add a front and rear light, in which I'll use LED filaments so the draw is low. The only real update I made was to install a solid state regulator and that was only because the original was rusted through the resistor elements underneath.
The trick with 6v is to have BIG wires (2/0) and to ensure all connections are bright and tight. It's a common misconception in my opinion that 6v is not up to the job. Like any voltage, it's a matter of keeping things in good order. If they are, then 6v works as well as any other. I do realize that there are additional benefits going to 12v such as availability of course. I just like to keep things somewhat original and continuing to run on 6v has some "cool" factor for me. When I get my pinion done (parts at the machinist getting refaced), I'll put up a video of it starting on 6v. It really works well.

the reason for changing is the new starting engine as the original crapped out. is 12 volt and the glow system is going to be 12volt.
i plan on posting a article about the whole job when its finished. i'll submit it to the magazine too. nearly all of it has been done with simple workshop tools by me and im no machinist im not even a machinists left foot so its worked out well so far.
a 12v generator you wouldnt know the part no: would you Neil as my book only shows 6volt systems. that could be the solution. machining gets expensive fast.

If you want to go to 12V you could chase up a 1S1420 generator it is a 12V generator, I do not know what they where on, but I do know it uses a delco reg

Sounds good, Darryl has the part # for the 12v generator. I don't think U-series D2s or D4s were ever 12v - only 6 or 24 at least according to my parts catalog. Looking forward to the thread!
1S1420 is a Delco 12v gear drive generator used on the big engines, D342, D343, D353, D8H, D9G and a few others.
There is a lot more flexibility and parts available for the Delco Type A generator than the Type B American Bosch.
The Cat glow plug chambers (for late s/n's) use 5/16-24 tpi glow plugs in 24v only. Curious as how your going to get to 12v units that come in 3/8-24 tpi, both in stepped drilling.

its a manifold heater plug as used on ford and massey tractors. i will be mounting it in the intake pipe just above the manifold flange. the new pilot engine will possibly exhaust through the factory spot too just havent worked that out yet.
one question is that drive gear the same or atleast the same pitch things become more "fun" if not. the gear shown for my machine 4f6981

Got one of those manifold glow plugs on my 188D Case Diesel. Can't say that it does much except run the battery down. Doesn't seem to have any affect on starting whether you use it or not.

hopefully the shaft size is the same as the original allthough thats not hard to get around gears can be bored and keyways recut.

The shaft is the same size as the others as I have one on my R4 which I run a 26 tooth gear.
You could try Tillys or Paul Moore for one.
