Hi, Folks.
That SINKING feeling - Cats involved in the rescue. There is a LOTTTTT of country like this scattered around Western Australia - when it'z wet, break the crust and down you go into SOUP.

At least they brought a decent chain for the recovery.

sing it with me: "I've got that sinking feeling oh oh that sinking feeling....."

ive heard it referred to as native cement when its dry its hard as, when its wet its wet, real wet.

part of my parent's property was like that when it was dry it was fine. but if we had a lot of rain it wasn't. it was loamy soil on top of sand on top of sandstone rock and red/yellow clay.

and why one its out the hole didnt pull the axles and let her free wheel. make life easier where you can. that machine isnt going to run any time soon it needs a trip to the workshop for at least a full service and fluids change.

I don't remember anybody saying that these people were extremely smart. I only said they brought a decent chain. That excavator is probably gonna needs some pretty serious cleaning in the slew ring area too.

Hi, trainzkid88
That would depend on the machine and accessibility to the interior of the slew ring. Most excavators have some access to the slew ring for lubrication purposes but few if any of them are designed to keep water out 'coz you ain't supposed to take 'em swimming.

If it was only water in the slew ring and it was well greased then it should be fine but if the water deposited mud or sand in there it would be an issue.

Hi, PhilC.
That is exactly my thinking and I suspect that the only way to be 100% sure would be to clean it out. But I yain't wunna the people who fixes 'em. I've pretty much always been working among those who keep the 'fixers' employed, although not contributing as much as some to their continued job security..

My brothers boss lost one of their ex out in the swamp area of their farm. The only thing left above ground was part of the boom and after a couple of recovery attempts the cutting torch was brought out. The boom cut off at ground level and the machine was written off.
