i went out to start my d4 7u ser. #6191 and bring it into the shop to see what is up with the clutch when i went to turn the gas on for the pony motor i noticed what looked like a paint flake only it wasn't the pony had froze and cracked there then i got to looking around and found a crack on the big engine and the lower radiator housing.

now i thought i had good antifreeze in it but obviously i didn't. what had happened was i saved 10 gallons of good extra strong antifreeze earlier this year but sharing the farm shop and people stealing my stuff a guy we had working for us went into my side of the shop took my good antifreeze and changed it with good looking but bad antifreeze.

now my question to you guys is what would you do in this situation. would you part the cat out, find another and make 1 out of 2, just sell it, or find the parts and fix it. i haven't taken anything apart yet if it is just cracked on the outside of the big engine i might just get it welded to where it wont leak and replace the pony and the radiator housing.

Braze the pony and radiator tank, seen lots of them. Have your local competent engine rebuilder "pin" the crack in the engine. Unless your welder guy is REALLY REALLY GOOD!

mike mc has a pony for sale in the other section off a d2, I'm not 100% certain as I don't own one, or any manuals, but I think d2 and d4 ponies are interchangeable. some one will correct me if I'm wrong. as for the main engine, you can lock"n"stitch it, or you can weld it up as well, or even braze it up as well as the pony block. might not be pretty but it would work.

When I tore down my pony to rebuild it I found I crack on both the bottom of the cylinders they had been ground out and filled in with JB weld. Before we tore it down we never knew they were there. There were no signs of leaks anywhere. When I was inspecting the main engine I found the same thing on the back corner of the block a crack that had been epoxied . There were a few spots that where pealing so I used a cold chisel and wire wheel to remove everything cleaned it really well with parts cleaner and re applied the JB weld. I know its not as good as brazing it but apparently it held up for about 15 years the way it was. One more option for you. I would at the very least try that before you consider parting it out. As long as its not mixing with your oil those should be relatively easy fixes.
Thanks God Bless

My original pony block has a JB Weld repair that was working fine, not leaking...unfortunately, that was the least of its problems, the pin from the blown piston had worn 2 big tracks in the bore...😮hwell:

well to fix the big block to where it won't leak im afraid the pony would have to come off. the main engine has a leaking remain seal so i think when i get around to it im going to pull both engines together and then fix them out of the cat.

That is a hell of a crack...if it busted it that bad on the outside, it could be busted inside too. Have you drained the oil to see if there's any water in it?

You might as well go ahead and buy a Prestone coolant hydrometer to check every machine you own.
