finally...with alot of good help from this forum..got my D-4 to back out of the shed under its own power😊 and yes it will turn in both directions now😊 I bought this d-4 in november with..stuck steering clutchs, which had to come out and taken apart..a pony motor that would not run, but with a diesel in working order. Today I used the pony motor to start the diesel for the first time and the ole pony had no problem at all getting the big motor going, I was able back out and drive around with some diesel fuel in the transmission/bevel gear to flush out any dirt I left in there. I Drained the diesel and added 90w transmission oil.

I have a #44 hyd system on the d-4 with the expansion tank on the hood. Someone had added #90 weight oil by mistake 😠 to the system..and of course I have some water in the system..(white oil when I pulled the filter) so I have been draining and flushing the system with diesel fuel. I was wondering to clean all the water and #90 weight oil out do I need to pull the front cover off the pump..and break some of the lines to the cylinders ..or just keep flushing. I dont have a book on this system..anyone know how many gallons of fluid or how full to fill the system.????

Finally measured my rails and track..bad news here..its 100% worn out..maybe have some life left..oh well...thats a problem for another day....😊

Congratulations on your progress😊 😊

If the #44 cover has not been off in a long time I'd recommend you remove it and check things out. #1 source of water is the seal/s on the control shaft.
The tank holds about 3-1/2 gallons....the complete dozer system 8 gallons.
The heavy oil is somebody's solution to leaking seals so expect leaks if you return to light or hydraulic oil (original spec was 10wt crankcase oil)

Fill level should be visible in the fill tube or check the 1/4 in pipe plug in the line going to the surge tank. (slightly fuller)

thanks for the info on the oil quantity....ole magnet...actual what happen with the #90 w oil was when they where getting the d-4 ready for the sale, they were rushing around trying to get some oil added to the hyd's and the guy told me all he could fine at the time was a a can of #90w..so he threw that in there...at least he was honest..as for the water..it had the tank on top and sat ouside for ten years with just duct tape on the tank opening..well that probably lasted a couple years...then the tank became a cat rain guage..😞 I believe there is a gasket that will probably be need to put the front cover back on..guess I will give cat a call (will be sitting down) and see what that costs....😮

Sidehill6600-
Happy for your success-way to go. Did you end up replacing your spacer ans clutch discs?

I have a link below for pics of my #44 with the front cover opened if you decide to take a look as OM suggested. If you change that filter, it runs about $55 from CAT. Source for that filter has been discussed here and I am not aware of any other source than CAT.

I brought up the possibility of flushing the filter and closed system with diesel or kerosene and I recall it was not seen as a good idea.

Anyway, congrats again. Post some photos. If you have time pay special attention to the undercarriag with them. Pics of your work would be great if you took any.

I don't recall the gasket as being to pricey.....but it's been awhile.
You will need the screw on cap for the surge tank...non-vented with gasket.
That gasket is no longer available but an old used sealing washer from a Ford FL1 oil filter cartridge works fine.....or maybe it was GM??? I can't remember for sure🙄 🙄

bernie...no I didnt replace the clutch disc ..I do have a set of clutch disc pads for a d-4..riveted on kind i got off of ebay. My clutch disc that is in there must be after market cause the pads are not riveted on, so I couldnt use the pads I bought. I will drain the diesel out, pull the cover like you all said. Your right old magnet..that gasket is only $14..plus shipping of $4. I need to find a cap like you say...its fine threaded so that makes it a little harder to come by, I will see if cat still has one. Had a neighbor come by and he look at my undercarriage..says he thinks the track was repinned and new rear sprockets put on not to long ago. We remeasured the track length and between the five pins and it was 27 inches..which is suppose to be new length..but this track hasnt run in ten years and its still tight from none use..once I use it awhile I think I will see some increase in that measurement..the rail height at 100% worn is suppose to be 3.35 inches..mine is 3.30 inches..might try some time in the further to look for a used track or maybe weld on this one..😊 thanks for the pictures bernie....that fillter now is $75..and cat is the only place its available..I had the local NAPA guy run it down.couldnt get one anymore .will try and get some pictures of mine posted..

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
