In some of the past threads it was stated that D2 5U rod bearings were the same as some series D4, if my feeble old memory serves me. I havn't been able to search these old threads out.

Please, can someone tell me what D4 rod bearing is the same as the D2 5U bearing? Will the bearing have the same part number for either engine? 😕

I keep getting sidetracked and that D2 engine is starting to put down roots on my engine table.😮 Would be nice to get it put together and get on with the project. Any help is much appreciated. Thanks,

Jack

The spec. sheet I have shows the rod journals on the D4400 (D4 4 1/4" bore engine) same size as the D311 in the D2 but can,t say if the bearings are the same or not as I don,t have a parts book for the D311 engine.

I have the D2 numbers: 5F-1138 in the original book for -0.030". 4H-3027 for -0.030" in current parts. Cat does have some still. I am not rich still.

Any D4 use either of those numbers?

Thanx,

Jack

I,d kind of think Cat would have them yet but the price would be very high I,m sure. Guys in the past have had luck with NAPA Automotive Parts Stores for some Cat parts so if you have one near by it might pay to check them first.

Jack went through my 7j and 7u parts book and numbers are different
I know Hastings make rings and pistons I would think they would have
bearings. Just a thought. Jason

I'm in the same boat. I have a nice D2 5U dozer that I'm in the process of rebuild motor. I need both main and rod bearing at .02 to .030 under. (see my post for D2 service manual needed). If you have any luck in finding someplace that has bearings, could you please pass on the information. I will keep you in mind as well. I have about 5 or 6 places looking right now. I may have to resort to having bearings made, even thought that will be expensive.

timbo1946,

I have found -.030 rod bearings at Cat and they are pricey. the mains in -.030 struck out at Cat. I have found mains -0.030 here and there, no complete set at any place, and no center/thrust main anywhere. Steve Feist at Foley Cat [email protected] has a source in Germany, nearly as expensive as Cat.

I also turned up a shop that can babbit rods and insert mains including the thrust. Found them through Jim Zimmerman: Paul's Rod and Bearing (816-587-4747) talk to Russ. I may yet go this route.

There are no -0.020 bearings to be had. Cat had only -0.030 and the 0.020 aftermarket bearing supply has dried up. My plan was to find used -0.030, grind the shaft to -0.020 and size the rods to the shaft. I'm getting anywhere on used bearings.

Good luck. Please keep me posted if you find anything useful. There's private messages on this board after this thread runs out.

Jack,
I have been in contact with Mike at Foley Cat, Steve wasn't there when I called. Mike scoured the world, I think for bearings, no luck. Mike contacted Clevit to see if they could make some. Clevit is capable of making them and will do so once Mike gets them the info for the bearings from Cat. No price yet, but Mike's contact at Clevit said they would be twice the price of a "normal" bearing. I asked Mike if this was "Cat normal" or for standard insert bearings. Mike thought it was of the standard insert bearings, so maybe around $40 to $50 per bearing (I hope). If the price falls in line, I'm going ahead and getting bearings made. Wanted to get you the info. If price is line with what you're looking for, you might want to contact Mike. Might help lower cost for both of us if there is an increase in the order quantity.

Tim,

I sent email as I was having trouble with this site on my computor for some unknown reason.

Yes, I'm interested. Would a larger order get us a better price? Others might be needing these sets also. Let us know what the price figure is apt to be when you find out. I could send a P.O. at that time if it's reasonable.

Thanks for info thus far,

Jack
