Hello all,

I am working on my no functioning right hand steering clutch.
I have a question about removal of shaft, PN 7B8778    I am under the assumption that I place a wooded piece and hit with hammer and drive it out thru the bottom.

Thank you all your time and advice as always. Trying to save these old timers one at a time.
P.S this is a 1953 ex core of engineers unit.

Thought I knew but I'm not sure. Appears to be a key involved for the clamp which may require the shaft to be pulled up and would probably destroy the
 bushing on the way up. Going down the lower bushing appears to be a smaller diameter and the key might damage the lower housing.
Here's a better cross section view of what's going on.

Did some more research on the bushing sizes. The upper bushing has an ID of 1.740" = shaft OD
The lower bushing has an OD of 1.502" = lower housing bore so the shaft is not going to pass going down.
I checked the many applications of the steering booster and none of the Service Manuals show instructions for splined shaft removal.
I suspect original assembly was keyed shaft inserted through the clamp into the bottom housing/bushing and then the upper busing was installed making it a locked in assembly and it was not intended to be a service part.
If the key is in the smaller diameter portion of the shaft (1.254" Dia.) depending on how far the key sticks out it should clear the upper bushing (1.740" ID) and the shaft could be removed by lifting or pressing up but that's certainly going to be a challenge.

Thank for taking the time, yes agreed this would be a challenge.
I think I am going to disconnect the yoke from the shaft and see if I get a monkey wrench on the shaft and let it soak first in some magic juice (kroil)

Hello all,

Just a quick update on the steering clutch. Was able to get the shaft to move with a big monkey wrench and a long pipe, just a little at a time and let soak again, but it worked. Spent some time cleaning up the splines with a file.
Filled the steering clutch assembly with 6 Quarts of oil and started driving, Dozer steered perfect, 5hrs later and still working great.

I must say spending 5hrs in the seat coming down from a mountain gives me a new respect of the individuals operating these on a daily bases. Like they say the Dozer will do the work for you but it will make you work working it. (Or something in that fashion) I am sure someone knows the correct saying. 😊

Anyhow once I get it home, I will steel have to take the steering clutch from the Dozer, the front pump seal has a slow leak. and the valve assembly has a small leak also.
I did put new bellows on the front of the housing, which Caterpillar carried, which was nice.
