I have a 1952 d82u and have finally started pushing trees. The problem is the left stearing clutch will completely release only part time. the brake will make it slip, but I'm sure this is hard on the brake not to mention my leg.
Was wondering if some one had any suggestion. I have looked in the manual
and the clutch removeal looks time consuming. Any help would be appreciated.

You could try going through the adjustment procedure but it seems you may be near the end of the wear limits or have a problem with linkage or thrust bearings.

I operated my 2U like that for years before I learned about the adjustment you need to make from underneath the tractor. I finally got the right manual that showed how to adjust. I'd used up the adjustment from above and thought I could do no more. After adjusting from below I had more steering than I'd ever had and with far less effort.

The shaft is trapped unless the transmission or the winch is removed.

Pump stays but you will have to pull the winch (cable or towing) shaft and coupling to be able to remove the cross shaft assembly.

the adjustment handhewn is referring to is called equalizer bar adjustment and can be accomplished by - first- check original adjustment up top by going to the s/clutch yoke and if the clearance between yoke and rear pressure plate is more or less than 1/2"+/- 1/16" it needs adjusting. Go underneath the backend of the machine and on transmission case immediately over the diagonal brace of the track roller frame you will see a nut- loosen nut ( only loosen ) go back up top and you will be able to move large operating lever to get your required clearance - don't forget to re-tighten nut underneath. Hope this helps Al ๐Ÿ‘‹

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
