I'm hopeing that Old Magnet and the rest of the technical guys can help sort this puzzle,

The parts book for the D2 5J lists the starting engine block part number 4B671 but the part number on the early blocks that I have are 4B666
I can't find 4B666 in any parts book,

Also the parts book for the 5U D2 lists the starting engine block as 7B3058 and 5F9340 the part number on the later blocks I have is 5F9341 again
no listing of 5F9341 in any parts book, can anybody explain this, are these just updated part numbers

one more question I have a Trackson T2 loader serial no. 5U365 that has been fitted with electric start on the starting engine, the dash panel
has a hole cut in the left hand top corner about 4 inches in diameter this looks like a factory job as it is very neat and has a very smooth edge,
my question is as this tractor has an early serial no. is it correct or should the dash panel have a bulge like the later machines to accomodate the electric starter?

I will try and upload some photo's ( the last attempt end up with me loosing all the text and swearing a lot!)

The casting number is seldom exactly the same as the final part number. Frequently it is close, within a digit or two. The final number refers to the finished assembly with all its components.

Can't help on the dash cutout, none of my small stuff has electric start pony motors.
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

All the part numbers you have posted are interchangeable, and those blocks will work on all the D2s, and D4s up through the U series and other applications. In general when you see a casting number that is a few digits different than the part number, it is because the part that is listed in the book is an assembly, meaning there a couple extra parts included other than just the casting, such as studs or freeze plugs, etc, 4B666 is listed as a block and 4B671 as a block assembly.
The Dash cutout is correct for an early U model with pony electric.
Over the years that the D2 was produced, there were a bunch of different dashboard types, and the parts book did a poor job of showing the different cutouts and bumps, here are pics of some of them.

All the numbers you have are good and interchange as stated.
General sequence is 4B0666 RPB 4B0671 or 7B3058
5F9341 RPB 5F9340 RPB 7H9318 which uses cap screws for the heads instead of studs.

Thanks ccjersey, josh and Old Magnet I thought that might be the case on the pony blocks, good to get it confirmed

Thanks also josh for the photo's of the dash panels.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
