I am overhauling the starting engine on a D 2 3J and am about to order the rod bearings and piston rings. The average of several measurements seem to be about 1.75" for the diameter of the crankshaft journals and 2.75" for the bore. If anyone knows of the "as manufactured" dimensions please let me know. I don't want to order the wrong stuff in the event of a grind and re-bore I don't know about! Also, are shop manuals available for these tractors?
Thanks in advance!

Your engine is standard bore at 2.751-2.752" Check the maximum wear at top of ring travel as well as scoring etc before deciding about boring oversize. CAT recommends max 0.006" wear and no more than 0.004 out of round.

Procedures for the pony motor are included with the engine shop manual. So if you have a Serviceman's Reference book for the 3-3/4 x 4" 4 cylinder diesel (D3400 engine, D23J, D25J, 212 grader etc...) it will cover the pony motor. Might need to find some of the technical specs elsewhere though. I don't believe the old SRBooks were long on specs.

The tractor/grader etc. Serviceman's Reference does not include the engine procedures, only how to remove it and reinstall it .

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
