Started the "new" welder yesterday. Held the preheat for 40 seconds and then hit the starter. Not sure if the preheat is working properly, as the second time I started it after it was warmed up, it still cranked a bit. Fuel tank is mostly full of offroad fuel. No telling how old it is. Engine tag says Power Unit, Serial # 51B2958. Series number H. Does anyone know what engine book would cover the powerplant portion of the welder. I believe it to be 1963. The lincoln welder end serial # check out to 1963 also.
Thanks in advance.

It will be coming. Both welders have a 3 position switch that say straight, off, and reverse polarity. They are both in the off position. I am trying to find out if I switch them with the engine running, while shut off or? Maybe it don't matter as long as it is not under load, but I don't want to wreck anything.

Now I want one!!! I would say you could probably switch the polarity around with it running as long as it isn't under load as you say Roger, the load comes when the arc gets struck.

Need to look for the D311 51Bxxxx series service manual to cover the engine.

Give me some models numbers on your welder, I may have that book too. Old Magnet would be in heaven looking at my stash... Hahaha... Offer still stands Old Magnet. Come take what you need.

Gosh, Thanks Glen. Will PM address. The welder is a Lincoln Shield Arc Welder, Type SAE-300X2. Looks like it came from a prison according to one tag on it.

Hey OldIronHabit,

Your just getting way too much Kool old stuff. I got your text, I dumped my Can, it's empty. Alright, I'll look in my crate of books for welder info. I know the collection had a lot of Generator, and welder books. I'll look and let you know. I'll have Jennifer Ship the 311 book tomorrow or Monday. I laughed when reading your post about your flatbed truck. I said to my Self, "Self, Roger should build living quarters." I guess I read that one correct, as your next post your admitted your plan. Have fun with your projects.... glen

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
