[quote="old-iron-habit"]Started the "new" welder yesterday. Held the preheat for 40 seconds and then hit the starter. Not sure if the preheat is working properly, as the second time I started it after it was warmed up, it still cranked a bit. Fuel tank is mostly full of offroad fuel. No telling how old it is. Engine tag says Power Unit, Serial # 51B2958. Series number H. Does anyone know what engine book would cover the powerplant portion of the welder. I believe it to be 1963. The lincoln welder end serial # check out to 1963 also.
Thanks in advance.

It will be coming. Both welders have a 3 position switch that say straight, off, and reverse polarity. They are both in the off position. I am trying to find out if I switch them with the engine running, while shut off or? Maybe it don't matter as long as it is not under load, but I don't want to wreck anything.

Need to look for the D311 51Bxxxx series service manual to cover the engine.

Ag-mike, Thank you for the link. I am going to join that forum. Lots of good welder stuff there.
OM, As always, Thank You for the prompt and knowledgeble advice. I will look for the books.
Is good after you figure out who really welds and who thinks they weld!
Hey OldIronHabit,

Give me some models numbers on your welder, I may have that book too. Old Magnet would be in heaven looking at my stash... Hahaha... Offer still stands Old Magnet. Come take what you need.

Gosh, Thanks Glen. Will PM address. The welder is a Lincoln Shield Arc Welder, Type SAE-300X2. Looks like it came from a prison according to one tag on it.![]()
