How much space should there be between (sleeve) that the latches are in and the arm that pushes on the sleeve? There is an inch of space on this one while it sits. when lever is activated arm moves foward pushing sleeve foward but does not latch, return spring totaly compressed.I put a temporary spacer between sleeve and arm, allowing the sleeve to be pushed further but still don't latch I can see the latch springs are working.Thinking of removing the the unit which means lifting the pony, do I have remove the govenor to get enough room also? If so is that very detailed? This is on a D4 Serial #7J1905W

Thanks,quinq

I just did this very job on a d2 5u this week. On the d2 only the back cover of the governor comes off.

You first remove the the dash
detach and lift the pony motor up
remove the back off the governor
remove the back plate and clutch handle from the pinion housing
remove the last bolt on the inspection plate under the pinion.
Unbolt the pinion and pull back and down passing below the governor. Let me know if you have any questions.

This will help hopefully, if your 2 latches are worn they will not lock, just be aware if you want to buy genuine replacements from your local Cat Dealer take a bottle of smelling salts with you when you go to pay the bill, they will need the salts to bring you round again after you have fainted, they are about $100 each!😆

Ha, you are soooo right! My dealer has a couple of chairs and asks you to sit down before they tell you the price. It's something to do with OH&S rules😊

PS I don't mind paying but it hurts even more when you see "Made in China" on the box. Imagine the mark up:jaw:

Could be the "stop" inside of the collar assembly that the latches engage that is the problem. You will certainly need to pull the pinion so you can diagnose the problem. I would not be scared to do some "tuning up" on the latches with a welder and file, but do be aware that it could get scary if they don't unlatch properly when the main engine starts. You can disengage the clutch and save the pony motor from being oversped, but the pinion has to unlatch on it's own, nothing you can do there. So extensive modifications to the latches etc might not be a good idea.😆
D2-5J's, D6-9U's, D318 and D333 power units, 12E-99E grader, 922B & 944A wheel loaders, D330C generator set, DW20 water tanker and a bunch of Jersey cows to take care of in my spare time😄

Thanks for the replies,I see Mike's pics show very little space vs 1" on mine.does that mean that the return springs are broke?I might try adjustment of latches.I was quoted 186.42 ea for the latches.Could the latches be set so tight that they can't ramp up on the lock? Can the gov. be removed fairly easy for clearance for removal of unit?
Thanks again,quinq

WOW, "Only" $186 each for those latches, I thought the $100 I got quoted a year or two ago was bad enough!😖mokin: Is that large spring broken in the middle, or is it just the photo? Before I started pulling anything off I'd be squirting a 50:50 mixture of diesel and ATF over that pinion for a day or two and working it back and forwards, it is not unknown for them to seize up, and looking at your butchered housing I suspect you have had plenty of dirt floating around there.

Try the easy fixes first, before abusing the check book and your fingers.

That's up from $43.07 in April 2009. I bought an extra set because world inventory was around ten pieces. Wonder now if I can find them. The ones currently available must be new manufacture. $186 seems about right. That's $45 for the guy who makes them and the rest is value added.

Probably nothing wrong with the latches. The engagement arm is bent to where the latches will not engage. Most likely due to wrong speed release adjustment or sleeve is loose from pinion. The price you pay for manually holding in the pinion without latch engagement.

Only 10 left in the World! Being so rare, no wonder they are expensive.

Old Magnet - how do you ensure that the speed adjustment for release is correct? My D4 30A tends to release too soon, ie., before the main fires up fully - hence the need to either hold the lever up a bit or re-set every time the starter releases prematurely - which is a PIA?

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
