Hey everyone,
Im completed with my direct start conversion or at least I thought I was.
I have a new starter, which will turn the d4 over fine with the compression off, but when I switch it to run, the starter will not turn the engine over.
I have two 1000 cranking amp batteries hooked together which are both new, I have new cables, I have checked all my connections, I have good solid grounds.

Im lost, what could I be missing at this point?

Maybe the starter is a warranty return?

Neil,
Is there anyway to test these starters while it's still on the dozer to make sure its the starter that is the issue? It's looking more and more like it is indeed the issue but I would like to be sure before I remove this beast yet again lol

Get it cranking, keep it cranking, then switch to run.
Does it crank or stall?
Hold the Crank button closed so the solenoid kicks in.
What starts getting hot / smoking?

Do you have your batteries connected + to - to get 24 Volts ?

Tried this as well, started turning it over on in start position once it was spinning, I moved it to run position and it comes to a halt and the starter starts getting hot with a little bit of smoke.

I have one of the first D4 factory direct start tractors and they were 24V, your symptoms sound like feeding a 24v starter 12 v

What have you got for clearance between the drive gear and the flywheel ring gear. Seems like it might be to tight.

Hey Pete,
yeah this was a aftermarket one I purchased on ebay while I was drilling the bellhousing for the the starter conversion. But now you have me wondering if the starter that I ordered was indeed a 24volt and labled as a 12 volt

what size of cables? you say you have two 1000amp batteries, you'd need some pretty big cables to carry the full load amperage, i usually use 2/0 welding cable to make battery cables out of, anything less and they won't crank over on a real cold winter day.

also have you pulled the brush cover plate off, i have seen new starters come from the factory and two of the 4 brushes were not on the armature, the starter never did hav a lot of power or cranking speed. the brushes were stuck back in the brush holder, popped them down and into place and it was like a whole new starter.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
