A good friend of mine has a nice R5 with cable blade. The tractor starts and runs good. My friend is a retired operator and has had some shoulder surgeries in the past, he is finding it harder and harder to crank the tractor. Fortunately the engine has the proper holes for a starter and the flywheel has a ring gear. Unfortunately we have been unable to find the correct starter. If anyone has an R5 with electric start could you provide the numbers off it? Any info would be appreciated!

A I in all it's new glory. If any of this is true, maybe the right starters for Gleaner combine R5 and R6. Proceed with great caution.

Hi Team,

looking at an R5 photo it seems likely (or not) that a Forty or No 10 or 11 gas Auto Patrol starter may fit as the main difference between these engines seems to be bore and stroke differences but crankcases are same/similar due to the varying bore sizes.

Part Numbers for the starters I came up with are same for Forty gas and No 11 Gas engines and are as follows

No11 Gas = 3B3983 and for the Forty Gas = 3B3983 or 1B5599, my guess would be that the starters would be Delco Remy and less likely a Leece-Neville.

If a starter ring gear flywheel is fitted to the R5 then one of the above may work.

I have a Supplier Cross Reference book with hundreds of Delco Remy part numbers that I will troll thru when time permits, there are no crosses for Leece-Neville.

The part numbers are in order for Delco so Cat numbers are all over the place in the some 14 pages with about 600 items per page in small print.

In the past I have made adapter plates both on and off centre to adapt modern starters to old engines and this would be the cheapest way to go in my opinion if originality is not an issue.

I stand to be corrected.

Regards,

Eddie B.

One of those new style gear reduction starters would be “the Cat’s Meow”!

The standard starter for the R5 is the 3B3983, Delco-Remy model 477, replaced by 9F7518, the model 477 is also shown as 3B2612.

The 1B5599, Delco-Remy model 574, is an odd offset unit for use with the Gar-Wood bulldozer.

As I recall those early Delco Remy starters do not conform to the S.A.E. standards.....as in different mounting bolt patterns.

Hi Team,

alas, I could not find a Delco cross reference Part Number for the 3B3983 starter motor in my Suppliers Cross Reference book.

Cheers,

Eddie B.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
