Starter conversion for older Motor Grader.....

Thanks for your help.I would still like to find an electric starter conversion for this old gal.She works out nearly as good as a new one.

The conversion will be easy if there is a bore with a cover on it below the existing pinion.
This cover has 3 bolts/studs and nuts holding it on. Otherwise the flywheel housing may just have a raised portion that will need to be machined. This machining must be done to VERY close tollerances. I think there is a pic of this area on the King of Obsolete's post about the D6 he is working on. Look at flywheel housing strapped to a skid, hannging on a crain.

I am doing the exact same conversion, just a few numbers apart. There is a plate on the right hand side of the bell housing that a 40,42 or 50MT starter will fit. Right now I am trying to determine the proper drive to match the ring gear and am going to use a 42MT. The 50MT is kind of overkill and the 40MT uses a solenoid that is a little cumbersome for the area, the 42MT is almost the same starter but with a round solenoid rather than the larger rectangular one. There are two different nose pieces used and the one that fits the 8T is the most common. If you come up with more numbers let me know and I will do the same. Bill

These photos might be of some interest...Found these photos of a CAT112 Electric Start Conversion...The back view is just showing how the battery mounted to the frame...The side view is good for the starter mount...I've got a CAT112 that I just may try this on...It has the factory machined hole in the bell housing for an electric starter...
