Interestingly it doesn’t list the piston size in the Specifications manual or the 3400 servicemen’s reference book. Just the bore allowances and the out of round.

At least I couldn’t see them. Guess they figure it can be worked out from those figures. I’ll look at the other manuals as the D4 shares the same type of starting engine.

Attached is the spec sheet from JP pistons that makes a replacement piston for the D2 pony motor.

Hi Eddie, was the 3 3/4 horizontal the one used on the D17000?

Hi Neil,
yes the D17000 pony had a 3 3/4" bore x 4" stroke.
27 Hp at 3,000 rpm.
One time way back we had a D17000 in our area powering a big face shovel in a quarry and it had a 4 cylinder side valve Le-Roi pony that was belt driven to the starter pinion assembly--I believe this was an option.

We used to get the D17000 in each year to de-glaze it by running it under load on our dynomometer as it never worked hard enough to not slobber--we were just setting up our old 1918 build Heenan and Froude dyno--I got to set up the dyno. for its first runs and this was one of the first engines we did--man did it smoke out the neighborhood until it cleaned up and sounded just great to boot with two straight out exhaust pipes.
