Interesting find Ad, Cat never had a patent on the elevated sprocket, the patent was on the bogie undercarriage that then helped the overall "system" work as designed.

Best utilized the high sprocket in 1914 with the Best 30 orchard tractor aka "Humpback", a full 8 years prior to the Cletrac F pictured above.

Hi, Folks.
I dunno if I kin find it now but I useta have a photo of a Holt ditcher made in 1910 that had the drive sprocket where the carrier roller would be on something like a D4. THAT would be the FIRST high-sprocket drive that I know of.

Going once? Going twice? Going three times?

And, IF my aging brain cells haven't totally given up on me, I seem to recollect that the Cletrac model F came out in 1919. How-wevver, I have heard that Rollin H. White bought the patents for the 'Cletrac' differential steering system from Best in 1916 after he saw one of Best's offering at a machinery show in San Francisco that year. Rumor has it that Best was in a state of financial 'need' at the time.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Hi Team,
Deas is on the right track--Holt built the ditch digger in 1912.
Here is a scan from the Caterpillar World magazine, No2 1988, from an article "The D10 Turns 10".
The article tells the story of the D10 high drive development over 6 pages.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

Hi, EDB.
Thatzitt. That's the jigger - 'cept, if I remember correctly, the photo that I have/had was a view of the right side of that same machine. Thanks for sharing.

BTW, do you by some chance have the rest of that article about the D10 turning 10? I seriously doubt that I would be the only person here who might be interested in it.

That thing looks pretty much like a reverse-engineered ripoff of a D10...wouldn't be the first time the Soviet bloc did something like that...

Hi, Quad.
Thanks for alerting us to the 'Romanina Rip-off' of the D10 and congratulations on finding the information that you have found, sketchy though it may be. It's more than I have been able to find so far. As far as the internet is concerned, it's almost as if that machine never existed, there is so little information about it. Maybe if we have any Romanian BB members, they might be able to come in with more information.

Hi Deas,
just received word my old desktop steam driven 'puter with XP is now alive again. It blew out 4 capacitors which were replaced and it seems to be alive again.
This laptop with Win 7 is hard to use with my steam driven scanner which seems to take blurry pix when used with the laptop.
When it is all going again I will post a new thread for the 6 pages of the D10 story.
Cheers,
Eddie B.
