Folks,

Let's say you're not very bright and you are swinging a hammer much too close to the cast aluminum pony oil drain tube. :nono: And let's say you hit it and break it off. This can happen, I know because I've seen it first hand. 😮hwell: I have the fix for you. I machined a new block out of steel that takes the place of the original aluminum one and uses 3/8" pipe fittings. In my case, er... um... I mean this guy I know, used a 6" nipple and brass hex cap. You could find a small valve and a hose barb if you wanted to make it easy to drain the oil into a bucket. The nice thing is that if the pipe gets broken you can put a new one on it easily. The steel block is 1/8" thinner than the original one too which makes getting the bolts started a heck of a lot easier. I have attached pictures of the finished part, the part after installed, and the drawing. I used, wait I mean this guy I know used 5/16" x 1-1/4" long bolts with lock washers. 1-3/8" long would be better but aren't normally stocked and 1-1/2" long are too long. After I made mine I added a 5/8" counter bore to the drawing for the lock washer so you can get another thread or so with the 1-1/4" long bolts. The one I made doesn't have the counter bore, but you can add it to yours if you're feeling frisky.

I was putting the sheet metal side plate back on that runs along the side of the diesel and has the hole for the drain tube to poke through. The bolt holes weren't lining up. I, er... this knuckle head, was trying to tap it forward. I got it moved forward but not before I did myself this nice favor.

It's kind of a running joke. If it's not rusty or broken I'm not interested.

I could have probably welded the original or got a good used one. Who knows, I still might just to have a spare. I like to fix things sometimes to make them better. As much as I hate to say it, I think Cat made a mistake. I don't think aluminum belongs anywhere near the oil system of a dozer. Hey, who knows maybe Cat will send out an update based on my design. Ha!

I should point out that I don't think the angled surface that is perpendicular to the pipe tap surface is necessary. I just did it because I thought it looked cool. I think there is enough clearance to the diesel for the block to be straight across at the 1-7/8" point.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
