Hi guys. I stopped at a Cat dealer a couple days ago and asked about getting a “small 20” service/repair manual. The guys there said they couldn’t help but maybe someone at ACMOC might be able to guide me. I’d like to take a look at why one of my dad’s “twenty two’s” steering clutches is slipping and figure I’d be better off with the guidance of a manual. I tried washing the clutch and it did seem to take care of the problem... but only for about twenty minutes.

You need to make sure the the drain plug in bottom is not plugged with mud or wrong plug be cause anything leaking thru old seal will build up in there and then the plates will slip .
To clean them you need to put a solid plug in the drain hole the fill with kerosene or I use mineral spirts high enough to be up at least a couple inches on the plate pack, then go run it slow for awhile useing the steering clutches alot so the open and close many times. Be sure not to fill as high as cross shaft so the cleaning fluid wont run into the other power train compartments. Stop many times and just pull the levers back so it will get up in the clutches ,if oild is the problem this should clean it pretty well. If not many other things like teeth being stripped off some of the fiber discs or linkage too tight

I don't know if these books are still available or not, I got mine through the dealer but quite a few years ago. Form # SENR 4672 covers 10 through 30 with op manuals and service manuals where available. Form # SENR 4673 covers 35 through 75. Spendy, but lots of great info.

The books should still be available. Cat has recently changed the process for ordering these (again :doh😊 and I think alot of dealers are just saying they can't get them rather than try to figure it out. The previous process was ordering them directly from Cat, but now they are treating them like parts and you should order them through your dealer. The Cat website still has the literature catalogs, although it appears they have removed any indication of how you might go about ordering them:

Click "more" at the bottom to bring up the "Track Tractor" link. You should get your media number from there. If you have the media number the dealer should hopefully be able to take it from there.

Thanks to all who responded. I will try the steering clutch cleaning one more time on the Caterpillar 22 but would still like a service manual.

On another post OzDozer said: "Caterpillar never produced a service manual (or Servicemans Reference Book as they are known) for the Twenty Two. The similarity between the Twenty and the Twenty Two was such, that it was deemed the Twenty SRB, would suffice for the Twenty Two.

You can acquire reprints of early publications from your Cat dealer .. here is the Cat website link to their publication list (click on "more" at bottom and then click on "Track Tractors") ..

Caterpillar Legendary Literature .. http://www.cat.com/cda/layout?m=90800&x=7

The Twenty SRB is form number P1179B and it was first produced on 09/01/1931 ..

Track Tractors list of publications (BIG PDF file - 2.99MB and 30 pages) .. http://www.cat.com/cda/files/268590/...k_tractors.pdf "

I asked a question via the Caterpillar website which they sent to the dealer
(parts counter) who previously wasn't much help.

Someone at the dealer-mailed me today stating that the manual (P1179😎
is still available for about $67.00 Sounds good.
