About 10 years ago I bought PA5118 at an auction not too far from me and saved it from the scrappers. The owner had passed and they were selling the estate. He had removed the engine, clutch and radiator and replaced it with a 3 cyl. Detroit from an Allis HD6 I think. Anyhow my grandfather helped me get it running and we actually loaded and unloaded it under its own power. The steering clutches and brakes worked fine and gears all worked and no growling or funny noises. Now I have finally bought some donor tractors with the parts I need in various states of dis-repair. I have removed all non-original parts and have started taking the best parts I have and putting them on this base chassis that I believe is in the best condition. Now for the questions - I will have many.....This tractor had a blade on it super heavy and the equalizer bar has been broken including the springs. Donor tractor 9231 has good parts to swap with single springs. Donor tractor PA 12xxx has good parts to swap but looks to have double springs on it.( a spring inside a spring) Soooo you fellas that have these, please give your opinion on this subject. I know the double spring did not come out on the earlier PA5118. I just notice some bounce on the single spring tractor when pulling it. Thanks for your replies in advance.

I don't have any experience with a sixty but it sounds like a cool project. Pictures as you go would be nice. Good luck

A sixty with a Detroit that was installed years ago. I would have to run it that way and show off their inginuity.

A good friend of mine said the same thing. I think the engine had some issues with the blower at the very least so I decided not to mess with it. Really the old fellow that built it had to be pretty sharp with the cable control he built from scratch on the front of it. Still worked and was live -- it ran off of the engines crankshaft. Shure was ugly though but worked.

Well today I decided to tackle the clutch and realized the shaft has been shortened where the clutch mounts so I have to swap upper transmission shafts. The service manual says to go out the rear with it. Can I go out the front since my engine is out , or does it have to go out the rear? I would rather not have to remove my belt pully if I can go the other way. Thank You

The top shaft is stepped. I think it must come out from the back.

Would love to see pics of the 60 with a Detroit, that would be a fast 60 if it didn't have another transmission

Thanks for the replies. Phildirt I was afraid that might be the case.. Steve, I'm not sure we ever took a picture of it. It was so ugly. I will have to see about getting a picture of the Detroit setup and you would have to use your imagination a little bit. It did have its own 4 speed tranny right behind it and it was still pretty fast even in low gear.

The floor plate and controls and the top of the transmission will have to come off too.

You can probably get away without removing the top of the steering clutch compartment, depending on how your belt pulley comes off. The top shaft has a 5/8" fast thread hole at the back end and usually does not require a puller - just a strong steady hand pull.

Do you have a replacement shaft? I think I have a spare in the 60 parts pile.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
