I am working on a 5J D2. The problem is it is not getting fuel to start the main. I discovered that the injection pump housing was low on oil and I think that the cam has gone flat. I have a parts engine and I have removed the pump housing from it and I am going through it. I am also going to go through the transfer pump and replace the seals on it. I have all the manuals in electronic form and the one thing that I do not have to do the job is the rack setting fixture 1F7945 for setting the rack. I would like to check the setting as I have everything apart and it would be easy to do at this time. If I am unable to locate the tool I will just go with the setting it is at.

Is there another way of setting the rack or is this tool needed to do it?

Thanks

This has been discussed on a previous thread on a U series engine. Right off the top of my head I can't remember if it was a stationary engine or one in a tractor?

I did a search and found some theads on setting the rack on the 5U series. It talked about a tool 3H1690 that you can replace for one of the pumps. The rack is different on the J series and the book I have does not say anything about the tool for any of the series but it is an old book. What I was wondering is if there is a different way to set the J series than what the book I have decribes.

I have also contacted a couple of sources that I have on getting the older tool and no one knows where one is located. I would also like to know if anyone knows of one some where in the Northwest that I might be able to use. If not then I will just use the setting that it is at. This pump housing came from a parts engine and I would like to have it checked before I put it on the cat while I have it apart.

Thanks

The 3H1690 tool replaces all those old fixtures that were used on the D3400, D4400, D4600 as well as the "U" models and others.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
