Friday evening I (finally) got the second D2 running and moved. Thanks, guys, for all of your valuable info. Without all of the knowledge I'd still be wrenching on it. Changed the oil and filter, then took it for a drive around the block. The 2nd new carb float seems to be doing the trick. We'll see how long this one lasts. I drained over a gallon of the nastiest water/mud/oil out of the main clutch housing. The clutch cover was missing when I got it. Evidently it's been missing for quite a while given the amount of mud in and around the clutch. I found the 1-1/2" hex tool for the drain plug in the tool box on the other dozer. What luck!! I plan on giving it a good bath with the pressure washer then following up with WD-40. Both steering clutches and brakes work great. It's nice being able to turn in both directions for a change. I need to check the transmission and final drives. The plugs I made to bypass the oil cooler seem to be working well (no leaks). I need to make some caps for the cooler itself so it doesn't get full of dirt even though the core is rotted out. I still have a couple of things to work on to make it a reliable machine. The starter pinion engagement lever doesn't engage enough for it to latch. I have to reach in the access hole with a pry bar and help it the rest of the way. Not sure how I am going to fix that. The cone brake for the pinion clutch doesn't seem to do much either. I can't see where there is any adjustment for that. I know I have too much oil in the pinion clutch. I will drain the excess off and see if that helps.
One thing I noted when changing the filter. I used a Napa Gold 1160 I believe. The filter was the same size/shape as the one I removed. However, the new rubber gasket ring was at least 1/2" larger in diameter (not cross section) that the old one. It took a lot of work with a small screwdriver to get the extra rubber worked into the groove of the filter housing cap, but I got it. Anyone run into this? It came with two new gaskets, both the same as far as I could tell.
