hey guy's. i have my D4 7U all apart changing the flywheel housing out due a significant crack which was leaking coolant into wet clutch.
thanks to the help of this discussion board i was able to locate the housing from general gear, (uch! that was a spendy ordeal $475.00 shipping was $200.00.) and get it apart. in the mean time i have pulled the head due issues with coolant overflowing out of the radiator due to combustion in cooling system. the cylinder head is crack free and not warped. so the head was pressure tested with pre comb chambers installed (note this is bieng done at a machine shop) and torqued to 200 ft lbs.. and also all 4 steel sealing washers are there. it is leaking prefusley around the chambers all 4. this is good news! cause the head is ok other than vavles need some work.
so any suggestions would be greatly apreciated! is there a copper or brass shim, ring or something else to squish down and seal. i have been taking pictures of this ordeal and will be posting them when my wife can help me,
i am not to computer savy.
thanks again!!

You can buy new pre cups from CAT; CAT Classic are about $20.00 each. Made in Italy. Buy new seals from CAT. They are copper. If your pre cups have glow plugs, you'll have to degree the pre cups and use the correct thickness seal to get all the glow plug ports to line up.

Could be the chambers themselves? They are still available for the D315 and aren't that expensive like $35 each. http://www.truckengineparts.com/search.aspx?find=D315

I'm assuming your referring to leakage around the top of the pre-com chamber. There are rubber seals on the inner (4F5607) and the outer (2H308😎 sides of the retainer that should be replaced .... four of each.

Glad to hear you were able to locate a housing....even though it's a bit of an investment but those oil clutch housing are a bit hard to come by.

Check to see if the sealing ring is copper, or steel that has had a copper coating only.I have had steel one from Cat dealer as wheel as from after market. Also my machinist complains he has no way to dress the seats ,but he complains about anything that is not perfect. But also very good at finding way to do something he has been told cannot be done, just need to find him when he is board and looking for a challenge. The last time I dealt with leaking pre cups it did get to be a pain to get them all to seal but keep after it you will get it.Ray

thanks for the reply. the pre comb chamber sealing rings are steel. when the head is tested it is pushing air up and around the threads and steel sealing rings. as well the valves are not holding that great either and the hieght is to low. the head is getting some new valves and brought back to spec. does anyone know where just the sealing rings are available for the chambers? other than steel. maybe i am missing something to get these to seal? 200 ft lbs for torque. the sealing surface was cleaned up and still no luck. the machinist say its not the chambers leaking. well $500.00 the head will get a valve job and brought back to specs. as bad as it was as well as the sleaves bieng glazed over and the exhaust manifold plugged with carbon its amazing it started so well! non ether it would start at 15 degrees F to push snow with about 10 mins of pony run time. my goal is to having back together and running friday. then on to fixing the track tensioners. angle iron has been welded to the tensioner threaded rod. the tracks keep dropping of the rollers when going in and out of holes and turning. the rollers and tracks are in great shape or this beast would be scrap. well back to pre comb chamber sealing ring any suggetions would be very helpfull!
thank you!

Sealing shouldn't be any great mystery. Takes good threads, seal surfaces...both head and pre-com plus sealing washers to do the job. How much corrosion and missing metal is gone from the head and the chambers? No, I don't know who has the copper seal washers but you might try Florin Tractor. Even if you do get them they won't fix a severe seat problem.

the threads on 2 of them are chewed up a little on the chamber. the head threads are good.
i will get 4 new sealing rings and hopefully this will take care of it. the machinist is going to complete fixing the head and resurfacing it and the put the new sealing rings on chamber and then test it till its sealed.
which i hope works?
thanks for the reply's

Be careful with messed up threads....it's easy to tear them out when going for that 200 ft-lbs torque. Replacement chambers aren't all that expensive.

good idea i guess thats cheap compared to the cylinder head valve job.
do right the first time is thought process when it comes to my day job.
it will be exciting to get it running again and work it with some of that black smoke coming out the straight pipe!!
last year i plowed with it ,only a 3 bottom 14" no problem! heck my steel wheel F-20 will pull that in 2ond gear. it would probably take 5 or 6 bottom to slow it down. i cleared an old farm site last year with these promblems, and when fixed i have a lot of boxelder trees to push down and clear fence lines.
thanks for the reply!

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
