Howdy from Oklahoma.  I’ve lurked on the site for several years.  I know a couple people here, one quite well, even worked on some of his old iron.  This Saturday I rescued a D6 that had a date with the scrap man.  Later 9U so it has wet clutch.  Appears to be in good shape other than a hole in the block!  My plan is to bring it back to life for use around my place and possibly a little land clearing here and there.  I make my living repairing and fabricating so this project will be all in a days work.

I will need an engine or some parts for this one if anybody has a lead on one.  I’d prefer a complete engine so I can OH it and swap it out.  S/N of this machine is 9U25761.  I happened to open the cover on the hour meter and it shows 0405.  It’s in good shape but I doubt it’s a 405 hour machine.

Thanks in advance for any guidance or leads on parts!

I have another machine to rescue this spring, a fairly late 17a D7 and what might be another 17a.  Haven’t seen the third one in person yet.

Good score. Have you inspected the damage? Reason I ask is that more than once someone has just patched the hole (in this case it looks like the rod went through the access cover which is easily replaceable), replaced just that rod, and resumed service. Someone with experience on the D318 might be able to comment on whether the piston comes out the bottom. If it does, you might be able to just swap it out pretty easily. Just a thought for the purpose of possibly saving you some time and effort.

I might be able to save it, the rod is beat up pretty good. Not sure what kind of shape the crank is in. If I ever get caught up in the shop I’ll pull the cover and have a closer look.

Hi, junkyard.
Sounds like you need to retire so that you have TIME to do these projects. LOL.

Happy hunting, gathering and repairing.

Just my 0.02.

Boy wouldn’t that be nice. Fix old stuff then find more old stuff to fix. I wonder how hard I’d have to lobby with the wife for that to be a thing…..hmmmm

Good catch, and welcome! I enjoy the puuuuuurrrrrrr of the 318 six cylinder motors on those older U series. Love 'em!
Keep everyone posted, and you seem to know already that everyone likes pictures, so you are on the right track...hehehe
Wife? The one gal blurted out that I needed to get rid of something, I listened; I got rid of her instead. No regrets. JM

We’re in a crap weather pattern at the moment. When it improves a bit I’ll pull that cover and take a look inside to see how bad it looks. One way or another it’ll be brought back to life. I’ll share a few pics of the 17a I need to rescue as well as another old Cat I haven’t seen in person and have yet to identify model wise. Maybe somebody on here will know what it is by looking.

Here’s the 17a I’ll get rescued soon.  I don’t know much about it.  It does have two blades.  Haven’t tried turning it over yet.

Here’s the unknown model. I’m assuming D6 or D7. The location of the starting motor is interesting to me. Maybe that will tip somebody off as to specific model.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
