What is the best way to build something to hold the boom for the bucket to stay in the lift position while working on machine? It would be for a '74 cat951c. Pics would be appreciated.
Thanks Steve.

A 2" by 2" by 1/4" angle iron setting on the extendable shaft of the cylinder is a great safety. It makes a solid link from the barrel to the loader frame. Set it on top of the cylinder shaft when extended and lower the loader until it is snug locking it between the cylinder barrel and the loader. I usually put one on each side just to be sure. Some new machine come with them supplied. Sorry I do not have a picture handy. They are very easy to make.

The Safety Bar fitted to a CAT 951C is stored in the loader chassis directly below the fuel tank, it is held via a C clamp with the nuts on the outer face visable from the rear of the loader, so look directly below the tank and you will see 2 bolt holes (If the supports missing ) or 2 nuts 3/4" AF spanner if its still in its stored position, the holes are 3" C/line, the parts book will give you a good indication of its shape and form, the bar as already stated is angle steel with a lenght of 32" total, it has a flat pad at 1 end that allows the rod to clear plus a channel section welded to the top side of the centre line, this avoids the bucket tilt linkage, in this pad and through the angle section 2 holes are drilled for the C clamp to pass, in the parts book it calls it a Bracket Support or something similar, but it is detailed enough to make it fairly easily, I hope this helps some it is hard to explain such a simple arrangment, oh and its 3"x3"x32" total your rod dia' is 2 1/4"

Hi, TCTractors.
IIRC, all the later 941's and 951's had a U-shaped safety brace that fitted over the exposed ram shaft when the ram was extended. It was WAY stronger than an angle iron brace and actually had a handle midway along it to facilitate placing it over the extended ram shaft. The 'U' itself was about 3" deep and both ends were plated with about 3/8" horseshoe-shaped plates to match the U-shape of the safety bar. It wasn't a lightweight but it sure did look the part when it was in place.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Deas, on this Rock the common bracket that was fitted to 951C series shovels was an angle iron section item with a pad at 1 end (as I stated) also a section near the mid position that had the U bolt located, I have never seen any U section supports for 951's or 941's, but I have a support holding up my 951B loader frame at this moment, it does have the CAT part No on it if its any aid to finding 1, its angle steel section though? the owners of these shovels often dont know where they are stored (under the fuel tank) I suppose I could take a snap of it some time, the support on the 955L etc is a U style section very heavy made that often is mounted on the loader arm.

p.s. the support I am useing came off a 951C 69H series of 1980 vintage, it was about 14th from last built, it was bolted under the fuel tank.

Hi Team,
from memory the support was usually supplied with the machine and was bolted to the cross beam across the rear of the machine just below the fuel tank.
It is shown for the 951 in the parts book in the tool section at the back of the book.
For the early machine (951A) it is P/No 6K 5227.
Sorry can not scan pix as my old computer recently burnt out and I cannot get this new one to change scan settings--files too big.
Cheers,
Eddie B.

O.M, and edb, very good pics that help my poor description thank you, these supports are scarce to find on shovels in the U.K. the 1 holding up my loader frame is near the same in the picture other than it has a Horse shoe shaped plate on the 1 end, it does have the same CAT part N'o on it, sadly the C-clamp was damaged needing cutting off from the stowage point on the shovel, that is probably why it was still in place and not lost.
