Hello,

I am going to cut up my spare 13A D8 for scrap this week.
In the past when changing coil springs on a car I have torch cut the coils to relieve the pressure. The shock absorber wont let the spring go anywhere and I find it's safer to cut them and then disassemble.

My question is....
Can I do the same thing with the big track adjusting spring??? It's hard to see into the center of the spring. Is there something running up through the center so the spring cant go anywhere? Just keep cutting coils until the spring is loose.
Or, how do I safely get the spring out?

Be good, Jim

Yes there is a large bolt hrough the center and a plate on each end of the spring that it goes through and yes the spring can be cut in pieces to disassemble it but if they,re good yet and not broken you might be able to sell the whole spring with the bolt and plates on it if the spring isn,t broken. The spring assem. can be removed but it has to be uncoupled from the front idler and adjusting screw.

Thanks SJ!!

I have tried to sell the remaining parts off this machine and no one wants to buy anything at even scrap prices.

Hate to do it but it's off to the scrapper for this old girl....
$210 per ton for short steel. Tractor without the blade should be around 48,000lbs. So, 24 tons X $210 is $5,040.

Not a bad wage for 2 or 3 days of work.

Cut a little up from the bottom on both sides of a coil, then finish the job with the torch tip well clear of the spring--up over the center of the coil. I found out that the spring will unload with the force of a sledge hammer and just neatly bash the orofices in your copper torch tip like it was setting a rivet! You have to cut several coils, four or five as I recall on my extra D7.

You are right about selling parts. Nobody wants them until they need them desperately. After about three years I had to give up and junk some beautiful stuff.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
