I am looking for a rear mounted ripper preferably with 2 or 3 shanks. What Cat model or designation should i seek. I see reference to rippers as #4 or #6 but dont know what this means. Also is it possible to take a ripper from say a D4 or a D6 and mount it without modification?

You need to look for a #5 or #6 ripper (same mounting). The #5,6 matches the tractor designation. A #4 (for D4) would take considerable alteration to mount and be a little on the light side but could probably be made to work.
