I have a 1940 d-4 7j with a cat 6w9189 wide blade. Is this original? I was told cat did not make there own blades untill after wwii.

Yes, Cat was late in supplying their own blades but they could be retro mounted to the earlier models. Your 6W9189 is more likely to be for the #44 hydraulic control. Blade numbers would typically be 6Fxxxx number for the wide (angle) blade. A couple of pictures would help solve identification.

As usual, OM is right. S/N 6W9189 is for a No. 44 Hydraulic Unit, single valve, built 1951.
