I have been looking for a larger dozer. I'd really like to buy a 46A in decent shape but haven't been able to find one. I going to take a look at a D-7G and wondered if anyone had any positive or negative comments about that particular series. The one I'm going to look at has close to 7,000 hours. The tractor I will buy will only get used 100 hours a per year or less. Thanks in advance.
D-4 7U-43159 with 4S dozer and Cat 40 scraper, D-7 3T-1179 with Cat 7S hydraulic dozer, D-7 17A 13,944, D-8 14A-1160 with Cat 8S cable dozer, Cat 12-99E-4433 Grader. All runners and users.

Hi, Paso Bob.
I didn't have a lot to do with them but I didn't see a lot of them broken down either. They seemed to me to be a pretty sold tractor. They did seem to be better balanced than the earlier F series which were a little light on the front with the first of the 6-bangers in them.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

Love the D7G! easy to maintain, built heavy, 7/8" roller bolts instead of 3/4". 3306 is a great motor. Find out if you can, records. With that many hours the turbo may need a new cartridge. If you can check magnetic filters, oil colors/levels, cut filters open/check between pleats, check for growling noises/trans/final drives, pump whining or howling, chattering noise in hyd tank, ticking noise from exhaust manifold leaks. And of coarse basic undercarriage wear. I really like the combined steering and braking.

Hi Bob,

Just to confuse the issue since you mentioned you has a soft spot for a 46A, have you considered an ex-military 75E series D7E or 61G series F. Some of those you'll find have less than a couple of thousand hrs on them and are well maintained, maybe even hrs in the hundreds. Whereas a 46A will be well flogged out as I'm sure you know. There's probably thousands of ex-mil 75E's /61G's around. 180/200 hp, turbo engine, OROPS, EROPS cabs, some have rippers, many have a winch. There will be many that have never left a base in USA and with super low hrs.

Here's a mob of them shipping out in Iraq, same thing. I love the way the Marine Corps gitter-done when it comes to moving out heavy gear.
