got my steering clutchs out and apart on my d-4..left side which was stuck was a total rusted up mess..tons of rust..pack measured nearly 3.75 inches before I took the discs apart..right side which was working has a little rust on the steel discs..measured 3.5 inches...book says limits are 3 7/16 to 3 1/8 inches..I priced a set from general gear..$300 or so..maybe a little more depending on if I can reuse some of my metal disc...after all the trouble of getting these clutchs out I was thinking about biting the bullet and putting all new discs in..even though the right side measured within limits..and the left side might after I get all the rust off..again I do not know alot about these discs..doesnt seem to be much meat left on clutch disc..like a 1/16th or little more above the rivets..any suggestions would be appeciated...this dozer is going to be use as a farm dozer only...thnaks

A while back,10yrs ago I had the same problem.Due to lack of funds"Money"๐Ÿ˜  I just sand blasted the steel & fiber disks they cleaned up good.I then reinstalled them and I never had a problem since.๐Ÿ˜Š If you can afford the new plates go for it.If not try the cleanup route.I am working on a D4 I have the same problem with this machine,I was told by a old time "Cat Operator" they just cleaned the plates replaced any broke disks and keep on working.Good luck Steamroller๐Ÿ˜Ž

Sidehill;
I just used fine sandpaper and an orbital sander to clean up the fiber and steel disks on the left side of of my JD40c. Now it works like new

sidehill,
After you get 'em cleaned up, restack 'em and measure. Unless you're close to the lower tolerance I'd say reuse 'em. Even in heavy use, those clutches don't wear very fast. I "overhauled" one side on my D4 as it was frozen and after it cleaned up it measured well within tolerance so it went back in. In the year plus I've been using the critter plowing deep snow, shoving fill back in around foundations as well as a bunch of skidding logs I've only had to readjust the steering clutches once and that was within an hour of putting everything back together again.

hey..thanks for all the help...I will clean them up and put them back to work...as I was cleaning up the tapered roller bearings on the bevel gear shaft..the same shaft the clutches are on and I noticed some pitting on the rollers(cause by rust I think) and also some on tapered face the rollers ride on..I would says 5% or less...no metal coming off..just the pitting..safe to go back together..??? ๐Ÿ˜ž

I replaced the tapered roller bearings and the throw out bearings on both sides. I did not do anything with my clutch discs or spacers other than insure they were not stuck together. I was within tolerances and did not want to spend the money. I figured the bearings were a better place to spend and the right side throwout was a crumbled mess...brake linings were totally gone from the bands. Worn to the steel.

The discs and spacers I priced shipped were approaching $800 for the full set.

As for adjustments, I need to back my adjustments off a bit. Mine actually tightened a little. I started with the three inches and may have an inch now after bout six hours of running over several instances.

Post some pics.

I purchased the throw-outs from CAT-. Later I decided to replace the tapered rollers. The throw-outs I got from Tri-State Bearings. They are located in Indiana.

CAT Part #1B4102 throw-out = Bearing Co. of America #7214E Price 1944 was $6.05

CAT Part #2B9049 tapered roller = Timken #555S Price in 1944 was $3.95

CAT was less expensive for the bearings and rollers I have replaced. This included those on the steering clutch controls, flywheel clutch and the steering clutch pack.

I got the manufacturers numbers from my parts book. I know the Timken is correct.

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
