been working on my new aquisition to day got the valves unstuck on the pony

got good compression. Took the mag off and cleaned the points polished up all the contacts got fire but not real strong.

Can hold the wire and crank over it will give a good through the shoulders jolt but not the throw your hands in the air jolt that it needs.

took it back apart changed out the condenser but still same

I am pretty sure it is not the correct mag for the machine but it must have worked in the past It is a fairbanks-morse x2a36

any suggestions would be helpful

thanks

My experience W RD mags has been the rotor seems to go bad & bleed some spark to ground- although have had coils go bad but that usually results in no spark real quick-new rotors seemed real pricey so-- my cure has been to redo dist from slant 6 plymouth & convert to chrysler electronic ign..- same cure on pony on 2U's & 13000..

how far a gap will it jump? though i do not grab my wires to test, your crazy!
if it will jump 3/16 of an inch your good. i would try it to see if it will run.
a fairbanks is the only mag i do not have. i like the cat mags but i bet the
thing will run. some of my mags are weak, but still seem to run.

Does this mag have the impulse coupler? Kicks the rotor around quicker? Is that working?

I had a 17A with no spark and it ended up being the coil. Coil was pricey 10 years ago. Probably more now.

You should be able to get a good 3/16" spark or so by just spinning it by hand bench testing. You have solid copper plug wires that are good? Cap is clean inside? Bench test it using a solid wire from the plug hole to mag case, holding the wire with pliers for a spark gap.

If you can't get a good spark bench testing, then no use cranking the pony.

Hi guys. I don't post on here but this one needs attention.

Besides the usual suspects, the snap coupler (presuming it has one) needs to be good as said. The biggie with most all mags is the magnet itself. It's old. And weak. And can be recharged. There are people out there who will spiff it up for you and make life all sparkly again.

My two bits,
Gary M

It would help if you posted the serial number of the tractor.
The RD7's had a variety of Eisemann mags....including the ones with the mechanical timing advance (lever on side of mag).

Gary,
there's a sticky on the ACME site with a list of vendors - can you post the contact details of the magnet fixer-uppers on to that sticky for us?

Cheers,
Neil.

original equipment was the eiseman. i have seen one fairbanks on an RD6.
mine have eiseman, wico and cat. through the years people put whatever
worked on them as the original failed.

if you cannot jump a visible spark, it will not run. i have yet to see one that
needed the magnets juiced, but have had a bad coil or two. can you hear the
impulse click when you turn it.

another thing i just thought of. when i was younger i filed the pionts on something that ran. after the file the thing would not run. i mentioned
this to an old mechanic and he said to run a dollar bill through the points
after i file them to clean the filings out. i had my doubts about this as i
have gotten away without doing that for years. i went back and ran a
dollar bill through the points and it fired.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
