RD4 weight is 10030 lbs.
Technically, in California, if you tow a 10,000 GVW trailer, even unloaded, you need a Class A license (commercial truck license). This is not a law that is often enforced. But if and when you have to cross a scale, they could check for it.
if your truck is a 3/4 ton, you will not need a CA number. These scales are drive thru so as long as the weight is ok and you have everything secured properly, you should get the green light in your lane. Drive near the speed limit and keep the red flags to a minimum. This is California and you pretty much can't do anything without breaking some law.
Keep us posted on your trip. G
okay, here in Washington you can run up to 32k If I recall correctly without a CDL, I may call the California Department of transportation and see what they say, I would prefer to not get a ticket. I do believe the old grouch I will be purchasing it from will not let me leave unless it is all tied down to perfection
You can check Calif laws on line.I just did some looking a month back. Something about farmers and employes good to 26,000 thousandth without anything but a class C,as long as the load belongs to the farm . Nothing is simple everything has to have grey areas so the lawyers can contest it. A commercial CHP officer that was at a farm meeting to explain said you are exempt hauling horses to herd cattle but not if going to a horse show,as that was for recreation. So check it out and decide how much risk you are willing to take.
Hey LCM,
Good to see you posting. "Not for Hire"... When you read laws, sometimes it states that when Not for Hire, it doesn't apply.when you do it for yourself and don't charge anybody, they look the other way. I know a guy with a 18 wheeler that blows every scale when hauling to a show. Farm laws give you a lot of room also. It is true in Ca over 10,000 in tow requires a class A license, but do some searches on the interenet. Heck you kids can do that interenet thingy faster than us older guys...roflmao
Traveling in more that one state puts you in Interstate rules instead of Intrastate. You can get by with a lot on farm rules but still get busted if a inspector has a crab on. Here our farm laws allow only 50 miles into the neighboring state under certain conditions. Take the backroads. You never know, you might see another must have. Last time I was in CA I seen a sign before the scale that said all motorhomes over a certain weight must enter. Whats that about.
yeah, I wish it was 2016 already, I will be getting a class A through my work because I want to become a field technician. Ill have to look into it. I've called our state patrol and asked them before and they said you can get trip permits for overweight loads, hopefully ill get lucky and get away with that as well as a set of not for higher stickers.
Here in Minnesota, you must have a CDL if the weight of the pickup, trailer, and the capacity of the trailer will put you over 26,000. It doesn't matter if you are hauling something far less than the capacity of the trailer, it's that you have the ability to haul that capacity. However, this only applies if you are hauling something to make money off of, or if you are hauling something that helps you make money. If you are in a privately owned pickup, hauling something that is privately owned and not for profit, then you are fine without a CDL. I have a buddy who is a farmer and races dirt track. He pulls an MCA Stock Car on a 14,000b capacity tilt bed car trailer and pulls it with a 1 ton long box 4 door Duramax. He has to have a CDL and DOT his pickup and trailer because all together that puts him over 26,000lbs and he can potentially make money at the races. How dumb is that?
Hey Little Cat Mech,
You can go to Ca.Gov and search about trailering. If less than 26,000 GVW and not for hire, they will allow over 10,000 but less than 15,000 behind a 10,000 truck, so less than 26,000 with a class C license. Sounds like it will work. In Ca, no pick ups required to stop at scales. So, stay under 26,000. There is a private scale close by, we can check weights. glen
