I was wondering what the lift pump on an RD4 was supposed to have for a seal. Looks like graphite packing, last I checked Cat doesn't carry a seal for it any more, here are some pictures of a scrapped out pump of mine,

They went through a couple style pumps and seal arrangements. Looks like you will have to make do or move up to the next style pump from sr. #4G9568 to 7J635 that used a different double seal. I believe all of them were a graphite packing.

That's a different pump.....still similar style....but uses different double seals and from what I can make out from the parts book the seal related parts are different dimensions and they are different part numbers.

May not get you out of the woods until parts availability was checked also.

Thanks Old Magnet, I think I will try making a new packings with some rope, and I will use a press to get that stuff packed tight, hopefully this will work, the old packing probably old, hard and drieded out, I appreciate your support

KidNV, would you happen to have a part #, it isn't a later style pump like Old Magnet was talking about is it?

KidNV,
Are you sure they are all the same seal?.....cause the spring, seat and retainer numbers all change to. Might be close enough to give you something to work with though....price is right.

OM, thats the ones I used on the pumps from 4G2195 and 4G7747... Just looked, mine has the same outer cover, it is from a later model and so is his, 4B9040 is the cover on the later style pumps. Needs to get 2 of them. They are graphited cloth rolls, packed in that shape, and are EASILY damaged if you bump near the center hole, yes, I did it once..

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
