So I had a friend that told me about a old RD-8 that needed a new home or would be junked, so needless to say I made plans to go look at it the next day .The tractor had ben purchased in 1964 and siting idle sense then behind a apartment complex in downtown salt lake city . I made a deal with the owners son on the cat and started planing for the rescue , it was on the side of a wetland behind a house in a residential area with very limited access . The next day my dad and I loaded the transport with a 951c and headed out to retrieve our new find , it turned out to be one of the toughest retrievals yet as the tracks were froze on the RD-8 and the hill up to the road was slick and narrow . We finaly got it to the shop yesterday and into the shop , I am glad to say both engines are free . The previous owner had removed the mag and pony motor gas tank , it needs lots of work to get it going but I am happy with it so far . let me know what you think !

Hi, Moulding.
That beast looks pretty straight considering the history - 50 years with no exercise would freeze most human's walking gear too. But the tracks look to be in good shape from down here.

Good save, M8. Happy resuscitating.

Just my 0.02.

You have a wonderful day. Best wishes. Deas Plant.

out of that rail, you'll be really Happy with that tractor!
Often I pull a 3 shank SouthWest Ripper on Farm fields with an RD-8, all three shanks can be buried to the frame in 2nd gear!
Even ripping Hedgerows on a field cut back that tractor is really comfortable to drive!
Nice Save!

Looks Good! That's around the last RD-8 serial number when changeover to the D8. you have a 1937 year. I have some parts from my 75 rebuild and a RD-8 parts tractor also if you need anything. Gary

Nice save! What's the tag below the serial tag? Any ideas why they never used it?

Have fun with!

bruce , the lower tag is a rebuild tag from our local cat dealer wheeler-kershaw caterpillar now its just wheeler as there was a buyout in the late 50s , it says crank and rods on the main have ben ground and the pony motor it std . Also it has a date of 1953 , the hrs. meeter shows around 4 thousand hrs. but I don't know if it works but I hope it is correct . rome/kg , I sent you a pm . I removed the pony carb and manifold yesterday to clean out all the mud wasps nests in the intake , ill be needing the short pipe between the pony manifold and the diesel intake if a good one exists . thanks for all the replies .

Nice old RD8, looks like it'll make for another interesting project. I like how it has an old rebuild tag on it yet, those small details like that really tell a story about it's past.

A real project, I would like to have seen video of the rescue, I am guessing you were able to free up the tracks on site. Look forward to seeing the progress.

Testimonials

"I also joined a year ago. had been on here a couple of times as a non-member and found the info very helpful so I got a one year subscription (not very expensive at all) to try it out. I really like all the resources on here so I just got a three year. I think its a very small price for what you can get out of this site."
